School Dismissal Manager
LOHS utilizes a program to help with early student dismissals and reporting absences called, School Dismissal Manager (SDM). It is accessible through SDM Website or smartphone app, allowing parents the opportunity to officially submit an early dismissal request or to report an absence without calling the school.
An e-mail was sent to all parents with log in instructions on August 28th from the email address info@schooldismissalmanager.com. If you're unable to log in, please reach out to Ms. Patricia Humes in the Attendance office.
As we adapt to our new cell phone policy, it's imperative you tell your child what time you'll be signing them out of school. They'll need to keep an eye on their emails to receive the confirmation from SDM that they're able to leave, which they'll then show their teacher. The front door attendance clerk will also need to see the confirmation email as they leave. Please be patient as we work through these changes.
We are excited to celebrate National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, September 16.
Orion Township staff will be at the high school during lunches on Sept. 16 to assist students ages 16 and 17 years old who are eligible to preregister to vote and students ages 17.5 and older can register to vote.
Students need to bring driver’s license, state ID or pictured school ID to the tables set up near the school store.
AUDITION Wed, September 17 - THE OUTSIDERS
Students interested in getting involved in theatre can sign up to audition or work crew for Troupe 2898's fall production, The Outsiders! Auditions are on Wednesday, September 17th from 3-6pm in the Auditorium. Students interested in auditioning should come wearing flexible clothing; advance preparation is not required, but audition monologues and scenes are available outside of room D352 if students would like to go over them. It is advised that students sign up in advance through scanning the QR code or joining the Troupe 2898 Teams page and filling out the form online. The first rehearsal for The Outsiders will be on Monday, September 22nd.
If anyone has any questions, please reach out to Ms. Dyer at meghan.dyer@lok12.org.
SAFETY INFORMATION
Transportation Drill This Week
As part of the district’s ongoing commitment to safety and security, we will be conducting a transportation evacuation drill this week. This drill applies to students who ride the bus to and from school.
When buses arrive that morning, a high school staff member will announce that an evacuation drill will take place. Students will be instructed to exit either through the bus front door or the rear emergency door of the bus. A staff building leader or other adult will be stationed outside the rear exit to assist students as needed.
Please note: Student drivers and students who are dropped off will not participate in this drill.
If there are any questions, please contact Brad Bailey, Assistant Principal at brad.bailey@lok12.org.

Device Protection/Insurance - ENDS September 30
The Lake Orion Community Schools Device Protection Program is open for registration until Septemer 30. The device protection fee will cover any laptop for students in Grades 6-12. Protection coverage is available and strongly encouraged given that in-person students will be transporting the device to and from school each day. If choosing to not purchase or opt out of protection coverage, each student/family will be responsible for the full repair/replacement cost of any device issued and assigned.
Remember the devices that will be used for next school year will be brand new so any damaged devices repair costs will be higher than the last few years.
For more information, please head to District Assigned Device Information to read more information and questions regarding reduced fees for device insurance please contact Amy Thebo at amy.thebo@lok12.org.
Parking Update/Passes
Reminder all Sophomore, Junior & Senior Families the below message went out 09/12/25 regarding Parking Update:
Thank you to you and your students for purchasing parking passes this year. We appreciate your support—this has been our best year yet for students displaying their passes and parking correctly!
We want to remind students who are driving to school without a parking pass that passes are still available for purchase. You can find the application and steps to obtain a pass on LOHS website. Please note that driving without a valid parking pass may result in the student’s car being towed at the expense of the owner of the vehicle. Communication with a local tow service indicates the cost to the owner of a car getting towed would be in the $350-375 range. Parking passes cost $70.
If you need assistance or would like to arrange a payment plan for a parking pass, please contact Mr. Kiner at anthony.kiner@lok12.org or through Microsoft Teams.
LOHS Drop Off and Pick Up Procedures
To help keep our morning traffic flowing smoothly, please ensure your student exits the car promptly when you pull into the drop-off loop. The loop is designed for quick drop-off and pick-up only. If you need a few extra moments with your student, we kindly ask that you use the parking spaces located in the loop instead. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping the line moving safely and efficiently for all families.
- LOHS drop off and pick up entrance for students is from SCRIPPS RD only.
- Please pull forward in the student drop-off loop as far as you can before having your student exit/enter the vehicle.
- DO NOT use the Staff Lot or Bus Loop for picking up or dropping off students.
- Students are NO longer allowed to park in the lower pool lot.

Food Service Information 2025-2026
LOCS students will have free meals through September 30, 2025, the end of the state of Michigan's budget year.
It is possible that, beginning October 1, families who do not qualify for Free and Reduced Meals through the Federally Funded School Meals program will be required to pay for their children's meals. The district will be sharing this information as soon as we are able to make that determination.
What families can do now:
- Families who qualify economically for free and reduced lunch still should complete the application to receive additional services at reduced cost (pay to participate for athletics, holiday assistance, field trip assistance etc.) Please follow the link below to apply for the Education and Nutrition Benefits: Family Portal
- Families can consider whether they will want to deposit money into breakfast/lunch accounts, if that becomes necessary. As Oct. 1 approaches, LOCS will share information about how to add money to the lunch accounts.
The LOCS Administration continues to closely monitor the progress and will share updated information when it is available.
The Happy Teeth Project
A local resident has created the Happy Teeth Project, a non-profit organization to provide dental care to LOCS students who cannot afford it under their current insurance. The generous offer is intended for LOCS secondary-level students, who can complete the submission requirements on the attached brochure and apply for support.
Contact information and the opportunity for others to contribute is available on the brochure, by emailing contact@happyteethproject.com and at HappyTeethProject.com.
Immunizations for School
Whenever children are brought into group settings, there is a chance for diseases to spread. Children must follow the Michigan state vaccine laws to attend school. For more information about vaccines and waivers, please visit LOCS Central enrollment, or contact Ms. Patricia Humes, the attendance secretary.
Cell Phone Policy
Lake Orion Community Schools has implemented a "cell phone free" policy for all students during the school day. The district's goal with this policy is to minimize distractions in the classroom, encourage face-to-face interactions, and enhance overall student engagement in learning.
By eliminating the presence of personal electronic devices during the school day, Lake Orion Community Schools aims to foster a more focused and interactive educational environment. Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss this policy with their students and help ensure a smooth transition when the policy goes into effect.
Key Protocol Details
- Personal electronic devices must be stored out of sight during class periods.
- The term "device" generally includes cell phones, personal laptops, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, and other wireless communication devices.
- The policy applies to all students, with legal exceptions for those covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Individualized Education Programs (IEP), Section 504 Plans, or students with documented medical needs.
- Click here for more details about the new policy.
Distinguished Dragon Award
The intent of the Distinguished Dragon program is to ensure that staff members who go above and beyond their regular duties are appreciated. The additional effort or support can range from helping an individual to helping a group or any effort that seems worthy of praise.
The staff member can be nominated by a student, parent, community member or even their own colleague. We ask for the submitter's name and contact information to follow up with specific questions if necessary. Please complete the form entirely so the individual can be appropriately honored for their contributions.
