Year One: 1985

The theme of the first national observance of School Library Month was "Where Learning Never Ends: The School Library Media Center."

AASL officials, local and national dignitaries got the month off to a rousing start on April 1, 1985 with a ceremony on the west steps of the U.S. Capitol.

Fast Forward 38 Years Later

School libraries have changed quite a bit since 1985! In 2023, we are living in a digital age and we no longer have patrons asking to see our microfilm collection!

Mrs. Turner's School Library Month Bulletin Board Nails It

"A school library is like the bat cave: it's a safe fortress in a chaotic world, a source of knowledge, and the lair of a super hero."

How can poetry support student learning?

Critical Thinking - many poems are not necessarily straight to the point but rather, paint a picture in our minds eye with descriptive language. Comprehension is not always immediate, and thus we analyze the poem to, perhaps, discover hidden meanings, seek personal connections, or understand what the poet is trying to convey. This is helpful in encouraging the brain to think of different things from various perspectives.

Remember Shel Silverstein?

Did you read Shel Silverstein as a child? For some of us, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic were our gateway to poetry. Mrs. Turner reproduced a popular illustration from another Silverstein work, Falling Up. We love it!

Poetry for the Pickin'

We have a growing collection of poetry books in our collection here in the DC Library Media Center. Student requests were a big impact in our selection process. If you have not read much poetry and would like to get started, stop by and see what we've added. And - don't forget about novels in verse.

ICMI - Part 1

In case you missed it: Gale In Context: For Educators is a lesson planning and instructional tool teachers can use to find and personalize digital learning content, plan remote or in-person learning activities, and provide equity for all of their students. In case you haven't heard, our newest resource for teachers is now accessed via our Canvas platform. You should not be prompted for a password as long as you use your school Google account. The video below can give you a brief overview if you need it. Three departments have had a brief introduction to this new resource but rest assured, more in-depth training is to come.

Gale In Context: For Educators - Teach

But WAIT! There's MORE!: ICYMI - Part 2

Our reading challenge site, BEANSTACK is now live as well!! That's right, good news just keeps a'comin'. All adults and students have been "loaded" into our school Beanstack site. But first....a gentle reminder........

Revisit the WHY

Your library media center team at DCHS continues to try ways to boost a culture of reading in our school. Motivating teens (or anyone for that matter) to read is no easy task since social media and gaming are now in the driver's seat. Our hope is that the platform will help us motivate teachers and students to develop or foster a love for pleasure reading and then, find ways to carve out personal reading time into their daily (weekly?) lives.

Customizable challenges (use your imagination!), badging, and rewards (ice cream party anyone?) will entice us all to embrace a book (or ebook/audio book)! Eventually, we will be hooked on the stories in addition to the badges and rewards!

An email will be coming your way about a May reading challenge. We'll be using Beanstack to manage our challenge and we hope - hope - hope - to have a high number of participants. An email was sent out last week about accessing your Beanstack account, (teachers), and somewhere in that email was a small (but tasty) incentive to register. Thus far, we've had 3 teachers find it.

Thank you for reading! Go Hawks!
