Greathouse Family Newsletter
March 16, 2026
Message from Administration
As we move into the third week of March, we want to thank our families for continuing to support the important routines that help our school run smoothly each day. Consistent attendance and arriving on time remain a top priority. When students are present and ready to learn at the start of the school day, they are better able to engage in instruction, participate with their classmates, and build strong academic habits.
We also appreciate families helping us ensure students are picked up promptly at dismissal. Our dismissal process runs most smoothly when students are picked up on time so that staff can safely supervise all students and complete end-of-day responsibilities. Please plan to arrive before dismissal ends so that students are not waiting after school hours.
At Greathouse, we remain committed to our focus on Academics, Leadership, and Character. Each day our students are working hard in the classroom, practicing leadership through collaboration and responsibility, and demonstrating strong character through kindness, respect, and perseverance. Thank you for partnering with us to reinforce these expectations at home and helping our Lions continue Roaring Into a New Era of excellence. We appreciate your continued partnership and support of our school community! 🦁📚
Car Rider Tag Reminder
Your yellow car rider tag is the key to picking up your child during afternoon dismissal. Without the tag, you or your designated driver cannot pick up your child. Just like a key, please be careful about who you give it to.
If something happens and you do not have the physical tag, you may show a picture of your tag on your phone to the car rider attendant (usually Ms. Kittell or Mr. Ice).
When entering school property, please make sure:
-
Your yellow tag is hanging from your rearview mirror, or
-
If you have multiple tags, place them on the dashboard in front of the driver’s seat.
If you have more than one tag, please drive slowly past the attendant and watch for their signal to move forward so they can record each number accurately.
Our process of dismissal works like this:
The car rider attendant calls out the number → someone inside enters it into our system → teachers use that list to send students to a holding area → then a staff member assembles students into lanes before they go out to the porch to wait. While it is a detailed process, it allows us to safely dismiss over 600 students each afternoon within 30 min.
Occasionally numbers are entered incorrectly or a child is not ready. If this happens, you may be asked to pull forward to the tree along the loop while we bring your child to you.
If you do not have a tag or a picture of the tag, we cannot release your child until after 3:50 PM for safety reasons. If you realize you forgot your tag, please park your car in the staff lot and wait until dismissal is finished.
If you are picking up from CEP and arrive before 3:50, please also park and wait until car rider dismissal is complete. CEP students will not be released until after 3:50.
If you need a replacement tag, please contact the office. Your car rider tag stays with your family until your child promotes to 6th grade, so replacements are sometimes necessary. You can use this link if you would like to purchase a protective tag holder on Amazon.
To ensure a smooth dismissal, please arrive on campus by 3:45 PM. If you arrive after 3:50 PM, you will need to park and sign your child out in the office. Make sure you know the first and last names of each othe students in your carpool because you will be asked when you sign them out. Please note: If a family signs their child out late more than three times, a meeting with administration will be required. Our office closes at 4:00 PM, and staff have other after-school responsibilities.

While students are not marked tardy if their car is on school property by 8:40 bell, we are still seeing students who are not reaching their classrooms by the bell. Many are still in the hallway as late as 8:50 because they must walk into the building, get breakfast, and put away their supplies before instruction begins. This means they are missing important learning at the start of the day. To help your child begin the day calm, prepared, and ready to learn, we encourage families to arrive a few minutes earlier so students have time to enter the building, get settled, and be in their seats by 8:40. Those extra few minutes make a big difference in helping students start their day successfully.

PTA Math in Action
Math in Action is a free math enrichment program for all K–5 students at Greathouse Shryock. The program runs throughout the school year and gives students the chance to tackle fun, challenging problems that build confidence, creativity, and critical thinking.
Unlike traditional homework, Math in Action is designed to encourage exploration and growth. It’s about celebrating effort, helping kids learn to think in new ways, and showing them that math can be exciting rather than intimidating.
Character Strong-Cooperation
Have some fun connecting as a family this month while practicing Cooperation. Here are 2 “PurposeFull Pursuits” you can complete together!
1. Cooperation is working together to reach shared goals. This week, plan a time where everyone needs to work together to accomplish a shared goal like cleaning up the space you live in or making a meal together. Make sure everyone has a role to play with specific tasks. When the project is complete, discuss and celebrate how each person’s part was important to the end result.
2. Find a time to sit in a circle together and celebrate all the ways you have seen each other practice Cooperation. Take turns sharing responses to the following prompts or make up your own! Remember to practice Cooperation as you take turns and listen to each other.
