Spotlight on Careers: Law & Public Safety
Hi students and families!
Are you interested in the Law and Public Safety pathway? If so, we have a couple of great upcoming events you won't want to miss!
📢 Industry Panel Presentation
When: Thursday, November 12th during W Hour
What: Hear directly from an industry panel featuring professionals from all branches of law and public safety. They’ll talk about what their daily jobs are actually like and share advice on how to get started in the career field.
🚌 Hands-On Field Trip
When: Thursday, November 19th
What: We’ll start the day touring the Winnebago County Courthouse, where students will get to watch live court in action and chat with a wide variety of courthouse staff about their career journeys.
Next Stop: From there, we’ll head to the Fox Valley Technical College Public Safety Building. Lunch will be generously provided by the Oshkosh Chamber at 11:00 AM, followed by hands-on activities in police work, fire response, and criminal investigation techniques!
Why Consider the Law & Public Safety Pathway?
For parents and students exploring future options, this pathway offers fantastic real-world preparation:
High Demand & Great Job Security: Public safety and legal careers remain some of the most stable sectors in the job market, offering clear advancement tracks and strong community impact.
Practical Experience: Students get early exposure to criminal justice, emergency management, and constitutional law—giving them a head start whether they plan to go to a four-year university, attend technical college, or enter the workforce right after graduation.
⚠️ How to Sign Up (Limited Spots!)
Only 12 students from West High School will be able to attend the field trip, so please don't wait!
If you're interested, please fill out the Google Form below so we can get you more information about both the panel and the field trip:
Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) ✈️🧳
Is your student thinking about studying abroad next summer or wanting to explore a travel option after graduation?
CIEE offers 120+ programs in 40 destinations around the world, with options in Language & Culture, Arts & Culture, Business, Leadership & Service, Social Change, and STEM. Students can spend 3–4 weeks abroad exploring a subject they’re passionate about, experiencing a new culture, building independence, and making connections with students from across the U.S. They can also choose to explore a gap year program or a college first year abroad program after graduation.
Students can meet with our CIEE representative, Shala Buckner, during W hour on Thursday, November 5th to discuss:
- Program and destination options
- Scholarships and ways to make study abroad more affordable
- What’s included and what students can expect while abroad
- Safety and support
- The application process and important deadlines
- Any other questions
CIEE also has over $7 million in scholarship funding available each year, with awards that can cover up to 100% of program tuition for eligible students. Feel free to reach out to Sra. Olivares (jennifer.olivares@oshkosh.k12.wi.us) if you have any questions.
Save the Date - Wildcat Preview Night, Jan. 6!!
Incoming 9th graders (current 8th graders) are invited to tour the building, explore courses and programs, learn about clubs and activities, and get a glimpse of life at Oshkosh West!
We look forward to welcoming our future Wildcats!
