Honor Differences & Care for Others”

Happy New Year! We hope your family had a wonderful winter break! Students’ excitement for being back flooded our classrooms and hallways. Students couldn’t wait to share their favorite experiences from winter break during class meetings and in their writing. Students were equally thrilled to reunite with their friends.

Students quickly settled back into classroom routines and practices. In almost all grade levels students reflected on their growth and set personal and academic goals for the second semester. Students were committed to taking steps to be healthy, kind, mindful and challenged. They reflected on the character traits they wanted to embody and discussed what it would look like and sound like to live these traits.

We are proud of students' drive to be all they can be and their desire to learn and grow!

CELEBRATING MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. CELEBRATING MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

Gold Rush students have been learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and his many contributions. Students read about the historical time period and King's efforts to create change.

Gold Rush ended the week by celebrating as a school community. Students sang songs about Martin Luther King Jr., listened to an excerpt from his famous 'I Have A Dream' speech and heard students speak about the importance of honoring differences. We thank GRE’s music teacher, Mrs. Petty, for bringing us together as a school.

We appreciated the learning, reflection and understanding that resulted and the opportunity to celebrate him together.

LIBRARY REMODEL HAS BEGUN LIBRARY REMODEL HAS BEGUN

GRE's library remodel is underway! Books have been packed, existing furniture has been removed and new electrical wiring has been installed. As you can imagine, packaging and storing over 15,000 books was a large task! The space will be painted this weekend and then we will wait eagerly for the arrival of our new shelves, seating and tables in mid January.

As you are aware, the library is closed through mid February while construction is underway. GRE Librarian, Mrs. Golish, is holding library lessons in the classroom during these months. While students are unable to check out books during the remodel, all students will continue to have access to online libraries, including EPIC books and RAZ kids. Classroom teachers will reshare how to access these online resources via classroom communication.

Our remodel is made possible through our Digger Dash Dollars and school funds. We thank our parent community for contributing to this meaningful project. We feel fortunate that our strong financial position and our community contributions allow us to complete a full remodel.

We cannot wait for students, staff and parents to see the bright new space! We will share opportunities for families to visit the remodeled space in February.

COGAT TESTING COGAT TESTING

Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, Gold Rush will implement Universal Screening for Gifted and Talented Services for students in second grade this February. All second grade students not already identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of February 5th. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age peers. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school. If your child is already identified for gifted programming, he/she will not participate in this testing.

If your child is in kindergarten or first grade and you believe he/she needs to be evaluated for gifted services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process. Please note that requesting this assessment automatically initiates the evaluation process for Gifted Identification. To request CogAT testing please click on GRE's Referral Form. The Gifted Education Facilitator, Stephanie Brown, will contact you with next steps once your form is complete.
