Portrait to Practice
The Portrait of a Titan identifies six competencies we want all Berea City School District students to develop throughout their educational experience: Adaptable, Communicator, Critical Thinker, Empathetic, Innovative and Leader. These competencies are developed and reinforced across grade levels to help prepare students for success in school and beyond.
Students Explore College and Career Pathways Through Hands-On Learning 🛠️
What does it take to investigate a crime scene, care for an animal, design a marketing campaign, repair something in a home or respond to an athletic injury?
Students at Berea-Midpark Middle School are getting the opportunity to find out through Paxton/Patterson College & Career Ready Labs led by Ms. Ottinger and Mr. Crevda.
The hands-on curriculum allows students to explore a wide range of college and career pathways through interactive, real-world learning experiences. Rather than simply reading about a career, students step into different roles, use industry-related tools and technology, work through challenges and experience some of the skills associated with that field.
Criminalistics, event planning, transportation maintenance, health care support, health science careers, cosmetology, sports medicine, nursing, veterinary medicine, design and marketing, welding, home maintenance and engineering are just some of the College & Career Ready Labs available for students to explore.
The variety gives students opportunities to discover what interests them, recognize their strengths and learn more about pathways they may want to explore in the future.
A student might discover an interest in health care through nursing or sports medicine. Another may find that they enjoy working with their hands through welding or home maintenance. Someone else may be drawn to engineering, veterinary medicine, criminalistics or the creative and strategic thinking involved in design and marketing. Each experience gives students another opportunity to learn about themselves and the possibilities ahead.
The learning taking place also extends well beyond career exploration.
Through the labs, students put the Berea City School District's Portrait of a Titan into practice. They are Critical Thinkers as they analyze information, troubleshoot and solve problems. They are Communicators as they work with classmates, exchange ideas and explain their thinking. They become more Adaptable when something doesn't work as expected and they need to adjust their approach.
Students have opportunities to be Innovative as they design, create and apply what they are learning in new situations. They demonstrate Leadership by taking responsibility for their work and contributing to their team's success. They also practice being Empathetic, particularly when exploring careers that require understanding, supporting and responding to the needs of others.
Under the guidance of Ms. Ottinger and Mr. Crevda, students are getting the chance to try something unfamiliar, develop practical skills and see connections between what they learn in school and the opportunities waiting for them beyond the classroom.
The goal isn't for students to have their futures figured out now. It's to give them opportunities to explore what's possible and learn more about themselves along the way.
The district will be sharing more about this program throughout the school year.
Welcome to the Me Museum! 🏛️
Mrs. Palcisko’s students at Brook Park Elementary created their own “Me Museum” to share a little about themselves with their classmates. Students visited each station, explored the displays, and learned more about one another.
By sharing their own stories and taking the time to learn about others, students practiced being communicators and developing empathy, two important Portrait of a Titan competencies.
Activities like the Me Museum help students get to know the people they will be learning and working alongside throughout the school year while building relationships and creating a strong classroom community.

Celebrating SRO Chuck Gute’s Retirement
The Berea City School District recently celebrated School Resource Officer Chuck Gute and thanked him for his many years of dedicated service to our students, staff, and schools.
SRO Gute has been far more than a familiar face at Berea-Midpark High School. Throughout his time with the district, he built strong relationships with students and staff while helping create a safe and supportive school environment.
He also became an integral member of the district’s Safety and Security Council. His knowledge, experience, and thoughtful perspective helped strengthen safety practices across the district and made him a trusted partner in this important work.
Officer Gute, thank you for your commitment to our schools and for the difference you have made throughout the district. You will be greatly missed, but the impact of your service will remain. We wish you the very best in retirement and in all that comes next!
How do I view and pay fees?
Student fines and fees can be paid online via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
The Fees tool provides a list of all fees assigned to you. Fees may include things like a lab fee for a science course, a fee for a field trip or the cost of an athletic activity. Fees that are still owed and fees that were paid appear in this list, followed by the ongoing balance for all fees.
BCSD uses Peachjar, an electronic flyer posting and distribution system to distribute school flyers and approved flyers from community groups and organizations that sponsor activities of an educational/enrichment nature for students and staff >> view current flyers
The Berea Board of Education holds regular community conversations to give the public access to board members outside of the formal public participation setting of a meeting. Residents will have the opportunity to meet and discuss any concerns they may have with two board members during a 30 minute time-slot set aside prior to each regular scheduled Board of Education meeting. The goal of this effort is to more effectively connect with the public and learn more about the community.
