River Mill Elementary - February 14th
Dear River Mill Families,
Happy Valentines Day!
First, a heartfelt thank you to our families and students for your dedication, patience, and hard work during our virtual school day. We truly appreciate your commitment to learning, as maintaining consistency is essential for student success. Holding virtual learning days instead of full days off helps ensure that students stay engaged, retain knowledge, and continue building important skills without interruption. This consistency supports their academic growth and minimizes learning loss, keeping them on track even when circumstances prevent in-person instruction. Thank you for your partnership in making every learning day count!
We also want to thank Bettina Boles, our district Social Worker, for organizing and coordinating our Mental Health Awareness Week, where we all had the opportunity to recognize and prioritize our mental health and well being. Thank you families for supporting your child to also participate in our dress up days that went along with it.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all the families who joined us for our Kindergarten and 5th Grade Family Breakfast! It was a joy to share breakfast and quality time together. That same evening we had the pleasure of enjoying a fantastic music concert with our 4th and 5th grade students at the auditorium. A huge thank you to Mr. C for his dedication and hard work in showcasing our talented students—it was truly a wonderful performance! We cherish these opportunities to connect with our families and celebrate our students. Stay tuned for more family events coming soon—we can’t wait to see you again!
As always, we appreciate your partnership in ensuring your child’s education is the best it can be. Your support at home makes a world of difference, and we are grateful to work alongside you in helping your child learn and grow!

Toys at Recess
We have noticed some challenges at recess with students bringing toys from home, which has led to distractions and conflicts. To help keep recess safe and enjoyable for everyone, we ask for your support in ensuring that personal toys stay at home.
Thank you for your help in reinforcing this expectation—we appreciate your partnership!
Here is our handbook guidelines:
Items to be left at Home
While we understand children enjoy bringing their favorite toys and items to school, it is very difficult to keep these items secure and prevent them from becoming a disruption in the classroom. It is best if all toys and personal items are left at home. The following is a list of items students should not bring to school:
1. Toys (especially toy weapons, including knives of any kind),
Radios, tape recorders, CD players, iPods and cameras,
Candy and gum,
Unnecessary amounts of money,
Fireworks, sparklers or explosives of any form,
Laser pens,
Skateboards
Trading Cards for Positive Behavior!
We are thrilled to introduce a fun new way to recognize and celebrate our students for following our school rules—Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible! Students can now earn special trading cards when they demonstrate these positive behaviors at school.
Encourage your child to collect all four cards! Each one represents an important part of our school community, and we can’t wait to see our students striving to earn them. Be on the lookout—when your child receives a card, it will come home in their green Thursday folder.
Let’s cheer on our students as they work toward earning their cards! 🎉

Attendance Matters
Did you know that many of our youngest students miss about 10% of the school year—around 14 days, or just two days a month? This level of chronic absenteeism in elementary school can predict lower test scores and challenges with retention in later grades. Every day and every minute of school matters, contributing to your child's growth and success! Please help us support your child's learning by ensuring they attend school every day and arrive on time. Thank you for partnering with us to build strong habits for lifelong learning!
Student Handbook Spotlight
River Mill Elementary Dress Code
A dress code helps create a positive and focused learning environment by ensuring students wear clothing that is appropriate, safe, and free from distractions. It promotes a sense of community, minimizes disruptions, and helps students concentrate on learning. Thank you for supporting a school environment where all students can thrive!
Dress Code
Student dress, in general, must meet reasonable standards of cleanliness and safety and must not disrupt the educational process (School District Policy JFCA). As a building policy, students may not wear:
Clothing which exposes a bare midriff,
Spaghetti straps,
Tops which un-tie in any fashion,
Clothing displaying alcohol, drugs, or weapon messages,
Clothing with words or pictures that can be interpreted as sexual or ethnic harassment,
“Heely” shoes (shoes with wheels),
Chains or spikes of any kind.
Short pants that are shorter than mid-thigh,
Pants that sag below the hips. For safety reasons and for students to participate in physical education, students must be able to run without hanging onto their pants.
Anything that would be considered part of a costume (tails, masks, etc)
Students who come to school dressed inappropriately will be offered clothing to put on (based on availability) or will need to call home for a change of clothes. The principal or vice principal will make this judgment as needed.
Although rainy-day recess occurs under the covered play area, students will be required to wear a coat/hat to attend recess during cold and/or wet weather.
Again, if you ever have any questions our concerns regarding student behaviors, our discipline policies, or our handbook, please do not hesitate to contact us!
