Message from Nicole Pease Message from Nicole Pease

Happy Friday DCS Families, while last week was all about Halloween treats, this week was focused upon giving to others. As I hope you are aware, we held the coin fundraiser this week and our school raised $900 which will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project!! Thanks so much for the wonderful support!

Yesterday afternoon, our school was honored to host a special Veterans Day Assembly to recognize and thank those who have bravely served our country. Students in all grade levels participated by singing patriotic songs and sharing meaningful readings to show our appreciation.

We were especially grateful to welcome local veterans, and their presence made this event even more meaningful for our students. A sincere thank you to all veterans for your courage, commitment, and the many sacrifices made to protect our freedom.

This morning we attended a play at ConVal High School and it was fun to see some former DCS students on stage or behind the scenes. We enjoyed wearing our DCS Raven's wear their t-shirts that our PTO purchased for field trips.

I hope you have a restful weekend, see many of you at Parent Teacher Conferences on Monday. Take care, Nicole

Kindergarten with Deb Lang Kindergarten with Deb Lang

Kindergarteners had a busy and exciting week! We practiced ordering numbers from least to greatest and played games to find one more and one less. In social studies, we explored maps and learned about the compass rose. During literacy time, we retold The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything and Room on the Broom, complete with a fun broom craft. We also began our new science unit on the five senses—using our eyes, ears, noses, mouths, and hands to explore the world around us and keep our bodies safe! Check out our latest pics here .

Grades 1/2 with Heather Fletcher Grades 1/2 with Heather Fletcher

Our first and second graders have been busy preparing for the Veterans Day Assembly! The students practiced a special readers theater, recited a heartfelt poem, and sang The Star-Spangled Banner with pride. We were so lucky to have Officer Dalterio visit and share about his time in the Marines. He led a fun and meaningful activity with the K–2 students about listening and discipline—giving directions like “put your paper here,” “write your name,” and even “take off your right shoe!” It was such a great lesson on the importance of following directions carefully.

I am so proud of how beautifully your children performed at the assembly, but even more proud of the kindness and respect they showed afterward—many walked right up to our veterans, shook their hands, and thanked them for their service. It was truly a touching moment!

Our Wounded Warrior coin drive was another huge success. Students got creative, earning donations—some made and sold artwork, and MANY traded candy for coins with Ms. Vicki, who had quite the line each morning! I am so thankful for our supportive DCS community—we really do have something special here!

3/4/5 Team - Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland 3/4/5 Team - Mrs. Quinn and Mrs. Garland

It’s hard to believe that it is November! Please remember to send your child to school daily with a coat, hat, and mittens, as recess time can be chilly!

For Social and Emotional learning, Mrs. Garland’s class continues learning about the Worry Woos. “The Worry Woo program is an evidence-based curriculum that includes props for teaching Social-Emotional Learning.” Ask your child about Nola, the monster of loneliness. Across the hall, Mrs. Quinn’s class continues to work on developing strategies to show kindness. Our current focus is on using positive self-talk and positive words to others.

For Language Arts, the third-grade students started our Literacy Pilot through the Conval School District this week. The first unit will focus on the core knowledge topic of Animal Classification, and our word work will focus on adding the suffixes -ed and -ing to root words. The fourth- and fifth-grade students will read several Thanksgiving-themed texts and focus on making inferences. They will also work on verbs in grammar and continue with ‘r’ controlled vowels, suffixes, and Greek and Latin roots in spelling.

For Math, the third-grade students will encounter the concept of area, relate the area of rectangles to multiplication, and solve problems involving area. The fourth graders are beginning Unit 3! The topic is Using Operations with Fractions. At the same time, the fifth graders have started a new Unit with a focus on Multiplying Fractions.

The Harris Center continues to support our science program with a kickoff to our Land and Water study for third- and fourth-graders. The fifth-grade students began their social studies unit on mapping the United States. They are embarking on a challenge to identify all 50 states on the map and to select a state for an individual mini-research project.
