Similes

First graders are finding similarities between two things in order to make a comparison and create a simile. After reading “My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks” by Hanoch Piven, we analyzed characteristics of a family member and listed their attributes in order to create similes.

Similes by Anne

My mom is as sweet as a cupcake when she cooks.

My mom is as stretchy as a rubber band when she walks.

My mom is as lovely as a heart when she dresses up.

My mom is as cute as a button when she laughs.

My mom eyes are pretty when she smiles.

Similes by: Carise Cook

My mom is as sweet as ice cream when she snuggles

My mom is as bouncy and stretchy as a rubber band when she is energetic.

She is as tickly as a feather when she tickles me.

She is as majestic as cool stones when I see her.

She is as beautiful as a butterfly.

Similes by Braden

My Brother

My brother is as stubborn as a knot in a rope when he is mad.

As smelly as a pig when he plays soccer.

As stretchy as a rubber band when he acts crazy.

He is as funny as eyeballs.

As tough as wood and as loud as a bell.

Similes by Garrett

My mom is as hard to find as an easter egg when we play hide in seek.

As tickelish as a feather when I tell her a joke.

As loud as a basketball game when she yells.

As fun as a jingle bell when we play war.

As fluffy as a cottonball when she hugs me.

Similes by Bailey Leonard

My Dad

My dad is as strong as a rope when he moves furniture.

As loud as a bell when he yells.

As clean as a napkin when he eats

He is as soft as a cotton ball when he is happy.

As pretty as a Lace when he is nice.

Similes by Elijah

My Brother

My brother is as grabby as a clothespin when he is chasing me.

As wet as a soggy paper cup when he gets out of the tub.

His hair is as soft as pipe cleaner when he brushes his hair.

He bumpy as fabric when he gets cold.

Similes by Julia

My Dad

My dad is as strong as a rope when he is mad.

As soft as a feather when he hugs.

As clean as a napkin when it gets dirty.

He is as puffy as a puffball when he’s sleeping.

As thirsty as a cup when he drinks.

Similes by: Tristan

My Brother

As mean as a moose when he charges into me.

As loud as charzard when he yells. As fast as the wind when he runs.

As stubborn as a knot in rope when he stomps up the stairs.

He is as sneaky as a snake when he sneaks up on me.

Action Research Project Action Research Project

First graders took a survey of the school and found over 100 books that students at Glenhope want to read that aren't currently available in the library. With some help from Mrs.Freyou, the first graders ordered the books. Students prepared the books to go into the library this week.

Second Grade Second Grade

In second grade we are experimenting with Makey Makey. Makey Makey is an invention kit that encourages students to find creative ways to interact with their computers by using everyday objects as a replacement for keyboards and mice. With the Makey Makey, you could replace your space key with a banana, use Play-Doh to move and click your mouse, or high-five your best friend to advance PowerPoint slides.

Third Grade Third Grade

Third graders have been learning about the Power of Flight. We researched the history of flight and all the inventions that helped pave the way for flight. We saved the best for last and learned about rockets last week.

Students described trends for everyday examples of movement and forces and learned about the effects of forces on the motion of rockets. Teams designed rockets and we tested the different designs.

Fourth Grade Fourth Grade

Students in fourth grade have been discovering the mindset of an explorer, and researching places that are still considered to be unexplored or still a mystery. After research is complete students will choose a format and communicate why someone should consider exploring that place.

The final product included a model of an amusement park with each section representing an unexplored region and featuring a ride, snack, and game.

Fourth graders completed their section of our Unexplored Amusement Park and presented to the GT LEAD second graders. I was impressed with the teaching skills all the fourth graders displayed during their presentations.

Historical Figure App Design

5th graders have been gaining awareness of historical figures' accomplishments and how the use of technology affects lives. The students chose a historical figure and researched the accomplishments of the historical figure. Then they designed an app that would have helped their figure achieve success. Students used Makey Makey kits to bring their apps to life.
