August/September 2026
A Note From Dr. Hooton & Mrs. Houdei
Welcome back to another exciting school year! We are thrilled to have our hallways filled with energy, curiosity, and smiling faces once again.
This year, our students have spoken, and we are proud to announce our 2026-2027 school theme: "Giddy Up for a Great Year!"
This western-inspired theme is more than just a fun slogan; it perfectly captures the spirit of our school mission: "Learning, Growing, Leading...Together." As we "saddle up" for the months ahead, here is how we will be bringing our mission to life:
Learning: "Giddy up" is our call to action! We are committed to ensuring every learner receives the support they need to succeed at high levels.
Growing: We are focused on the ride ahead. Our goal is to see continuous progress in every student, with specific targets for increasing growth in ELA and Math throughout the year.
Leading: We encourage every student to take the reins of their own educational journey. Through our Leader in Me initiative and Leadership Notebooks, students will track their personal goals and take on meaningful leadership roles within our school.
Together: No one rides alone at Duello. We are a "posse" dedicated to building a sense of belonging and strong relationships between students, staff, and our wonderful community.
We are ready to hit the trail and make this the best year yet. Thank you for being such vital partners in your child’s journey.
Some important dates to keep in mind:
-August 19: Meet the Teacher Night from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
-August 24: First Day of School / Doors open at 8:05 am / We officially begin at 8:20 am.

This year we will continue to build strong relationships and leaders in our students through our Leader in Me program. We will also continue to focus on The Mustang Three - Being Safe, Respectful, and Responsible. Together as a school community, we will help every child reach their full potential through clear communication, loving relationships, and strong academics.
We are always available to support you and your children. Please do not hesitate to reach out to either of us with any questions or concerns.
With Mustang Pride,
Dr. Alicia Hooton and Mrs. Amber Houdei
Car Rider Tag Reminder
Please fill out the Car Rider Form by Tuesday, August 18, to help us prepare for dismissal. Even if you are only picking your child up occasionally, please fill out this form. You will only need to submit ONE application per family. Your family will be issued two car rider tags. Tags can be picked up on the evening of Meet the Teacher or the tags will be given to the OLDEST Duello student in your family on the 1st day of school.
Please begin using your tags immediately. Those without tags will need to move out of the parent pick up line and have their driver's license ready to make sure they have permission to pick up the student.
Your tag will include your children's name and a number. This number is used in our system for getting students ready to be dismissed to the cars. If at any time you misplace the Duello issued car sign, please email or call the office for a replacement.

Habit 1:
During the month of September we will be focusing on Habit 1: Be Proactive. Being proactive means taking responsibility for our choices, actions, and attitudes. At school, students practice being proactive by focusing on what they can control instead of worrying about things they cannot. They learn that while we cannot always choose what happens to us, we can choose how we respond.
This habit helps children understand that they are in charge of their own behavior. Being proactive means making good choices without always needing to be reminded, using positive language, and stopping to think before reacting when things don't go their way.
Here are some ways to practice Habit 1 at home:
- Talk about what we can control. When your child is frustrated, ask, “Is this something you can control? What can you choose to do next?”
- Practice proactive language. Encourage phrases such as “I can try again,” “I can make a different choice,” or “I can choose how I respond” instead of blaming others or saying, “I can't.”
- Give your child age-appropriate responsibilities. Completing chores, packing a backpack, or getting ready for school without reminders are great opportunities to practice taking initiative and responsibility.
- Role-play challenging situations. Talk about what your child could do if a friend says something unkind, they make a mistake, or something doesn't go their way. Discuss the difference between reacting immediately and stopping to make a proactive choice.
When children learn that they are in charge of their choices, they begin to see just how much power they have to make a positive difference. Together, we can help our students become proactive leaders who take responsibility, make thoughtful choices, and focus their energy on the things they can control.

Reporting Absences
Regular school attendance is critical to your child’s success.
If your child needs to be absent, please notify the office by calling (636) 327-6050 and pressing 1 to report the absence. Be sure to leave your name, your child’s name and grade, the teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence. You may also email attendance changes to: attendance.duello@wsdr4.org
Arrival and Dismissal
For the safety and efficiency of all students and parents at Duello, the following drop-off and pick-up procedures will be enforced:
Staff supervision and student drop-off begin at 8:05 a.m. If you arrive early, please wait with your child(ren) until 8:05 a.m. to ensure they are supervised.
Parents should not drop students off in the parking lot to avoid the drop-off line.
Walkers - are defined as students who walk or ride their bikes home. These students will be dismissed to travel home on their own or meet a parent or guardian.
🚫 Please note: The parking lot is not a designated crosswalk and is extremely dangerous for students to walk through unattended. Do not bypass the car line for convenience, as this puts your child and others at risk.
Car Riders - are students who are picked up by a parent or guardian using the designated car rider line. This is the most efficient and safest option for families using a vehicle. Although the line may appear long, it moves quickly and is designed for safety and flow.
Car Rider Drop-Off (Morning) - If you are dropping your child off in the car rider line and they need assistance getting out of the car, please turn on your flashers. A staff member will assist your child safely.
A smooth and efficient procedure takes all of us working together. Thank you for following these guidelines and helping us keep all students safe.
