Principal's Pen
October 13, 2023
Dear Julian Curtiss Parents,
We are heading into one of the highlights of our school year, United Nations Week at Julian Curtiss!
This week the students will experience an assembly provided by our generous PTA Music with a Latin Beat, as well as the United Nations Day Parade and the International Food Tasting on Friday night. Fifth graders are researching their respective countries and cultures and will be visiting the United Nations in the beginning of November. Parents have offered to come in and share their cultures with their child's class. Please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher if you would like to share cultural information.
Our little school represents the broad diversity we see within the borders of Greenwich, which mirrors the diversity of America. We consider this, along with our mosaic of races, religions, and languages our greatest strength. The Julian Curtiss School, in partnership with their families and community, embraces our differences and through them are inspired to make the world a better place.
Respect and acceptance require us to have due regard for culture, values, customs, and beliefs. Once we embody this respect and acceptance we can model the essential elements of democracy—liberty, justice, the common good, equality, diversity, and truth so students can experience and contribute to their school environment, the community, and the world.
Thank you for being our partner in supporting our children to make the world a better place going forward!
Wishing you all peace,
Trish McGuire and Matthew Hartigan
Our United Nations day parade is JC's signature event! We are SO excited to gather together as a community on Thursday, October 19th at 1:00 PM to celebrate our amazing diverse school. At Julian Curtiss, we see our diversity as a strength and a reflection of our world.
This event allows us the chance to come together and celebrate our 60 countries and 30 languages as ONE great school community. We can't wait to see you there.
UNITED NATIONS PERSONAL PLEDGE AGAINST RACISM
Please join us in taking the pledge on Thursday at the Parade
“AS A YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE WORLD COMMUNITY, I STAND WITH THE UNITED NATIONS AGAINST RACISM, DISCRIMINATION AND INTOLERANCE OF ANY KIND. THROUGHOUT MY LIFE I WILL TRY TO PROMOTE EQUALITY, JUSTICE AND DIGNITY AMONG ALL PEOPLE IN MY HOME, MY COMMUNITY AND EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD.”

Grade 2 Advance Learning Program Assessments
Greenwich will give all Grade 2 students the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) in October before ALP Enrichment placement. Because these abilities are closely related to an individual’s success in school in virtually all subjects, data gathered from the CogAT is included as one aspect of the multiple measures that help the staff make decisions regarding students’ instructional needs.
The assessment will be given between October 16 and November 3. Scores will be made available to parents on or before November 17. More information regarding the CoGAT Assessment is available at https://riversideinsights.com/cognitive_abilities_test.
VETERAN'S DAY ASSEMBLY
Dear Julian Curtiss Community Members:
On Friday , November 10th @ 9 am , JC students and staff will be honoring veterans with a special recognition ceremony. The school will gather to honor our guests. Please consider whether you know any veterans who might like to attend.
If so, would you please contact them and, if they'd like to participate, ask them for the following information so that we can personalize the experience for all participants:
1) Name
2) Which branch of service
3) Number of years served
4) Primary responsibilities
5) Something you're most proud of related to your military experience
6) A contact email
We will introduce each of our veterans and give their bio based on the information we receive. If any of our Veterans would like to take a few minutes to speak to our students at the assembly in an age appropriate manner please let us know that information also. Please email this information to our School Secretary by October 31, 2023.
