Spring Reminder - Dress for School Success!
Dear Pioneer Families,
As spring arrives and temperatures begin to rise, we are seeing more students choose lighter clothing for school. With this seasonal shift, we want to take a moment to remind families of the importance of dressing appropriately for the school environment.
Please help ensure your student comes to school in clothing that:
Provides adequate coverage (including pants that stay buttoned and zipped all day)
Does not expose undergarments
Is appropriate for a respectful learning setting
We understand that fashion trends and personal expression are important to middle schoolers. Our goal is not to stifle individuality, but to maintain a school environment that supports focus, comfort, and mutual respect for everyone.
We appreciate your partnership in helping students make thoughtful clothing choices as they get ready for school each day. If you have any questions about our dress expectations, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your continued support.
Warmly,
JoAnne Fernandes
Principal, Pioneer Middle School
REVISED Pioneer MS Athletic Seasons for 2025-26
Pioneer families, please review the information below carefully. Your child's athletics schedule will be changing in the 2025-26 school year.
The Seamount League which Pioneer MS is part of has adopted the realignment of sports season for the 2025-26 school year.
Realigning the sports seasons will align our seasons with neighboring leagues. This supports the student athletes to participate in more sports and activities, relieves facility scheduling dilemmas, supports field restoration efforts and increases the number of highly qualified coaches.

Smarter Balanced & WCAS Testing Dates
As we approach the spring semester, we would like to inform you about the upcoming Smarter Balanced Assessments for Math and English Language Arts (ELA), as well as the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science for our middle school students. These assessments are an important part of tracking your child’s academic progress and ensuring we continue to meet their educational needs.
Test Dates:
Smarter Balanced Assessments (Math and ELA): May 13, 15, 20, and 22
Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science: May 21 (8th grade only)
Attendance is Critical: Please plan ahead to ensure your child is present for testing. Absences during these dates can impact your child’s ability to participate and complete the tests. We ask that you avoid scheduling appointments or other activities that could interfere with testing.
Testing is Required: Participation in state testing is mandatory for all students.
This week in Social Studies
In 6th grade Social Studies students are learning about ancient Greece. Classes explored the differences between the famous city-states of Sparta and Athens. We had a chance to learn about the famous Battle of Marathon, along with other important happenings. Currently, students have been preparing for our annual classroom debate where we argue who was the greatest ancient Greek philosopher, Socrates, Plato, or Aristotle. It’s always a bit of work preparing for the debate but so much fun to listen to students battle it out in class. On the horizon will be our chance to learn about ancient Rome. Below are some examples of drawings made by students. These drawings visually show different aspects of ancient Greek culture.
Ms. Sullivan's 7th graders are building an understanding of the structure of government, as well as how Representative Democracy is illustrated in the Washington Constitution. They will soon begin to explore the structure of Washington's government using an online platform called "TVW."
Mr. Blanchard's 7th graders are traveling through history and engaging in research to learn more about historic events and people that shaped Washington into the state we know and love today.
8th grade social studies classes are finishing up their Westward Expansion unit this month answering the question: Was it destiny for the US to expand the way it did? They will be using evidence they have gathered over the unit to support their answers. The last unit of the year will be on the events leading to the Civil War and the war itself.
Ms. Joslin's 8th Graders are finishing up their Classroom Based Assessment. They are researching a constitutional issue, taking a stance, and supporting their ideas with evidence from their research using M.L.A. citations.
