Open House and Fall Traditions!

Dear Elmore School Families,

We had another superb week at The Elmore School! The fall colors have really popped around the lake this week creating a breathtaking landscape for us to be surrounded with. We also had some much needed rain this week which may have disrupted our normal outdoor time, but the rain was welcomed after such a dry couple of months.

We are really settling into our daily routines by now. Spelling practice (phonics) routines are becoming more familiar. As I explained in an earlier post, students do not have a set list of words to memorize. Rather, they are learning specific spelling patterns and applying them to words. This is a new approach, which should have greater outcome for students in the long run.

During writing lessons this week, students learned about adding temporal words (transition words) that help a story have an order. Later they began writing first drafts of their personal narratives ,with a focus on writing the beginning.

Our math lessons this week for 2nd and 3rd graders focused on moving from bar graphs to using tape diagrams to model situation. The tape diagrams are a way to represent quantity in a visual, linear modal. Then students apply mathematical operations (addition and subtraction or multiplication) to solve problems. First graders are focused on answering questions about data presented in a table.

Thanks to all who were able to make it to our annual Open House on Thursday Night. I know it was a busy day as HS sporting events and MES Literacy Night were also taking place. Your presence and dedication to show up and take interest in your child's school experience is so important. If you were unable to make it, please feel free to stop into the classroom before or after school with your child.

Friday, turned out to be one of my favorite days of the School Year. As we watched the colors brighten around the lake with autumn shades of red, orange and yellow this week, anticipation, for returning students, and wonder, for new students began to grow. Questions about when we would paint the mountain resounded with excitement. On Friday morning, with the grass being wet from the previous days soaking rain and fog hanging in the air, I told the class that we would need to wait until next week to paint. However, around 9:45 I looked out the window and the fog had lifted and the sun was shinning so brightly on the hill, that I shifted my plan and decided It was, indeed, the perfect day to paint the mountain. While the children ate snack and had a little recess outdoors, I gathered our supplies and prepped for painting "Plein Air" (open air painting)! Students had a brief landscape painting lesson in the classroom. Then, with rain pants on and "canvases" in hand, we headed across the road to the banks of Lake Elmore where we spent the rest of the morning painting the landscape. Last year we made note cards with prints of our paintings and we sold them as a fund raiser for the school. I will plan to do this again this year. Look for more information to come.

Please find School Photo Order Forms in your child's Friday Folder. All students will get their photo taken for school records. If you wish to order photos, please sent payment along with the order form.
