Updates From The Principal
Hello NRMS Families,
I was an overnight summer camp kid when I was growing up. I started going to overnight summer camp at age 11 and I eventually became a camp counselor too. As a school leader, I try to tap into ways that school can become more like camp in the eyes of our students. You see, camp kids count down the days until camp starts and they cry when it is time to go home. In schools, we too often have students counting down the days until school ends and the tears may come when it is time to go back in September. If we could develop ways that school is more fun and learning is more engaging for kids, we have a better chance to tap into every child's potential as scholars and as citizens. This year, the House System has helped us begin to shift the thinking about our school. And, on June 18, 22, and 23, we will have the House Cup Olympics that will determine the outcome of the year-long quest for the House Cup. For those that were also camp kids growing up, this is our version of camp color wars.
Today, students signed up for the events they will participate in during the olympics. Next week, students will be given their House T-shirt and the games begin on Thursday afternoon. We could use parent volunteers to assist with these afternoon events and hydration stations. If interested and available to volunteer from 12:30-2:30 any/each afternoon June 18, 22, and 23, please email Gregg Barr barrg@nausetschools.org.
In between now and the House Cup Olympics, we have a number of field trips and we will distribute yearbooks to students that ordered one. Please remind students that they should only write positive messages in the yearbooks of their classmates. There will be opportunities to purchase a yearbook if you did not purchase one for your child in advance.
We also have additional volunteer opportunities. Please consider helping out at the 8th grade dinner dance on Thursday June 18 at the Sheraton in Eastham.
While we all can't help counting down the remaining school days (under ten when you receive this), our hope is that students are looking forward to the field trips, the olympics, the awards ceremonies, the yearbooks, and for 8th graders the dinner dance and promotion ceremony more than celebrating the end of school. Soon, maybe, we will start counting days until the first day of school on September 8. Wishful thinking and worth aspiring to. It's 88 days by the way. Can't Wait!
Enjoy the weekend.
