Classroom Expectations: Fidgets vs. Toys Classroom Expectations: Fidgets vs. Toys

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Dear OMS Families,

We recognize that some students benefit from having a fidget available to help with focus, attention, or anxiety relief during the school day. When used appropriately and for their intended purpose, fidgets can be helpful tools and are welcome in our classrooms.

However, it is important to distinguish between a fidget used as a tool and a toy used for entertainment or play.

Fidgets should be quiet, unobtrusive, and used in a way that supports a student's ability to focus and participate in learning without distracting themselves or others. When an item is being played with, shared, used to distract classmates, or otherwise interferes with instruction, it is no longer serving its intended purpose as a classroom tool. In those instances, staff will consider the item a toy and remove it for the remainder of the school day. Students will be directed not to bring that item back to school.

Other items, including Tech Decks, stuffed animals, dolls, and similar toys, are not appropriate for the classroom and are to remain at home.

Our goal is not to take away tools that genuinely help students succeed. Rather, we want to ensure that the items students bring to school support learning, focus, and a positive classroom environment.

Thank you for partnering with us to reinforce these expectations and help maintain classrooms where all students can focus, learn, and thrive. We appreciate your understanding and support with this.

Sincerely,

OMS Staff

Kiss The Fish Kiss The Fish

User uploaded image
zoom_out_map

Grade 8 held a Kiss the Fish fundraiser to benefit the class 8 end of year activities. Staff volunteered to have their names entered to "Kiss the Fish." Jars were put out for each staff member volunteering and those staff with the most money in the jars had a choice to Kiss the Fish, or pay for another volunteer within their category to kiss the fish. Thank you to all who donated!

In grade 6, Mr. Hodgerney, whose jar collected the most money in the building, puckered up to kiss the fish in grade 6 lunch.

In grade 7, Ms. Livermore "won" the honor of kissing the trout in the grade 7 lunch.

In grade 8, Mrs. Burlingame won.....BUT, she exercised the clause that allowed her to donate $20 or match the funds in the jar, whichever was more, to send in an alternate to kiss the fish on her behalf. Thank you to Mr. Mayotte for being a good sport and stepping up to kiss the fish in her place during the 8th grade lunch, and thank you, Ms. Burlingame for the extra donation to the grade 8 class. We apologize there is no picture (yet) of Mr. Mayotte that was shared, but we'll work on getting that to share soon!

Ms. Joseph was the ONLY non-teaching staff volunteer, so she was going to "win" with as little as 1 cent, since she was the only person in the category. As she is admin and at every lunch....she puckered up 3 times--once at each lunch--to kiss that fish. She asked if the fish would at least take her to dinner after,

  • Prescription medications require an updated physician's written order and must be in the original container.
  • All medications also require a consent form from parent or guardian. The form can be found on the OMS website under the Nurse page.
  • All medications should be transported to and from school by a parent or guardian (we cannot accept medication from a student). This includes inhalers and epipens.
  • If you are dropping off an inhaler, I will need the Asthma Action Plan provided by your student's health care provider.
  • If you are dropping off an epipen, I will need the Allergy Action Plan provided by your student's health care provider.
