Butterfly Award: Lori Loussedes at the ELC

Congratulations to Early Learning Center Curriculum Coach Lori Loussedes, this year's Butterfly Award recipient. Over her 24-year career at CPS, she has been adept at both teaching content and making the learning fun for students. Her impact on the school community extends from the classroom to her support of her colleagues. She runs the ELC's Spirit Committee to bring joy to the entire school and created initiatives like Monday Motivation to keep morale high.

Lori embodies the work of Carolyn Arond, who the Buttery Award is in memory of. Throughout her professional career in Chelsea, Carolyn believed in creating a welcoming, safe, and nurturing environment for her students. She was an innovative teacher, and was supportive of her colleagues and among their biggest cheerleader.

Congratulations, Lori!

Veronica Dyer-Medina was recognized for her extraordinary commitment to Chelsea Public Schools and the heart she brings to the school district every day. Through her work, she ensures that our students, families, staff and community members are seen, celebrated, and connected.

Our students are showing bravery and confidence by coming to the front of the class to share and explain the strategies they used to solve math problems. We are learning that mathematicians don’t just find an answer—they explain their thinking, listen to others, and learn from different strategies. So proud of our brave mathematicians.

COA Happenings

Chelsea Opportunity Academy continued its tradition of hosting “Culture Days” during the first two days of school—a mix of community-building, orientation to new coursework, and welcoming new students. Highlights included a scavenger hunt across Chelsea and our annual Crew bridge-building contest, with prizes for the strongest, tallest, and best-looking bridges. These activities gave students opportunities to reconnect, build relationships, and begin the year as a community. Meanwhile, our team continued interviewing and registering new students, welcoming them into COA’s flexible, personalized pathway to graduation.

Welcome Back Panthers!

We’ve had an amazing start to the school year at Chelsea Virtual Learning Academy! Our Panthers have jumped right back into the school community with energy, creativity, and plenty of fun. From sharing stories about their summers and welcoming back our teachers to friendly competitions and creating skits about what it means to be a CVLA student, we’ve been making the most of our time together virtually!

We were also excited to welcome some of our recently graduated Panthers back to CVLA this summer. As they prepare to begin their college journeys, it was wonderful to see that they’re still part of the CVLA family. Once a Panther, always a Panther!

We’re looking forward to all the learning, connections, and exciting moments this new school year will bring!
