PASD Early Dismissal on April 8, 2024

Dear Pottsville Area School District students and families,

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a rare and exciting astronomical event presents an opportunity for students to learn about science, space, and the wonders of the natural world. Our area of Pennsylvania will experience a partial solar eclipse when the moon will obscure nearly 93 percent of the sun. The eclipse will begin around 2:07 PM and last until around 4:34 PM. The last time Pennsylvania was in direct line with a total eclipse was 1806, and the next total solar eclipse that can be seen from the contiguous United States will occur in 2044.

Our students will learn more about the partial solar eclipse and eye safety from Pottsville Area High School Astronomy teacher Mr. Adrian Portland. Mr. Portland will be featured on the JSC Elementary Morning Splash, DHHL Middle School, and PAHS morning announcements. Many students have had the opportunity to learn from Mr. Portland during presentations in the Pottsville Area High School Planetarium.

Looking directly at the sun without proper eye protection, even briefly, can cause permanent eye damage. The timing of the eclipse during our regular dismissal times presents challenges for us to ensure the safety of all students and bus drivers in the district. As a result, all of the Schuylkill County Public School Districts, including Pottsville Area School District have decided to dismiss school early on Monday, April 8, 2024. The beginning of the window of dismissal times will be as follows: Pottsville Area High School – 11:30 am, DHHL Middle School – Noon, and JSC Elementary Center – 12:30 pm.

All home athletic practices and events along with extracurricular activities will be rescheduled or have their start times adjusted to occur after 5:00 PM.

NASA warns watching the sun as it’s slowly obscured by the moon’s shadow without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing can cause serious eye injury. We encourage you to speak with your children about how to safely view the eclipse and the precautions they need to take if attempting to do so. There are several good resources on the NASA website linked here: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/education.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Sincerely,

Sarah E. Yoder, Ed.D.

Superintendent

JSC Dismissal Information for Monday, April 8th

Walkers - 12:15 PM

Bus Students will immediately follow walker dismissal

Change to Morning Drop-off at JSC Elementary, Starting 4/4/24

Due to increasing safety concerns on Mount Hope Avenue during morning arrival, the following changes will go into place, beginning on Thursday, April 4, 2024 (when we return from spring break):

  • The Mount Hope doors (located on the upper level on Mount Hope Avenue) will no longer be open for morning arrival. All students being brought to school by private vehicle will enter the school through the main entrance located on the lower level. (This is the way students entered the building in previous school years.)
  • Please note there will be NO changes to the PM dismissal procedure at this time. (Kindergarten and First Grade walkers and siblings will still be dismissed from the upper level for the remainder of the school year.)

When bringing a student to school by private vehicle, the adult dropping off should utilize available drop-off / pick-up parking spaces located on 16th Street, available street parking on Mount Hope Avenue, or available parking on the lower road (pool road).

We will have JSC staff on duty beginning at 8:30AM each morning, which will increase the drop-off window by five minutes. (Students will be supervised in the main office lobby area from 8:30AM to 8:35AM.) Students will report to homeroom at 8:35AM (as usual).

Our drop-off window will begin at 8:30AM and will end at 9:00AM. Students are not considered tardy until 9:01AM. The longer window is being provided in an effort to alleviate morning traffic.

MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) at JSC

Here at John S. Clarke we know that it takes a village to best meet our students' diverse needs. This year, we have been fortunate to welcome new staff members to our team, so we are able to offer additional targeted support. These positions included an assistant principal, behavior interventionist, and school counselor. Please know that our school team is here to help with any concern, challenge, or problem. We are all here for one common purpose - to successfully support our students in their paths to achievement.

JSC utilizes a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) structure to match support to your child's needs. Our top priority is providing the highest level of support and communication. We understand students/parents may need help or have questions, but they might not be sure who to ask. We would like to share the inclusive supports available to your child(ren).

Students do not fit into a "one-way educational path", which is why it is essential for the varying supports to help meet individual student needs.

  • Classroom teachers provide differentiated instruction to all students in their classroom, in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, Social Studies, and Social Emotional Learning. All classroom teachers receive professional development, and ongoing support and guidance from our Title I reading specialists, math interventionist, school counselor, building administrators, curriculum director, and district instructional coach.
  • Reading and math interventionists are available to assist students with reading and math progress in the classroom. Each student at JSC receives specialized intervention, to target specific needs in reading.
  • If academic difficulties continue, the MTSS Team will review the classroom data and interview the teacher(s) to consider additional supports to accelerate progress.
  • If a student is demonstrating behavioral difficulties and/or is experiencing a life stressor, a referral is made to the Elementary Student Assistance Program (ESAP) where a certified counselor is a certified counselor and trained ESAP team is available to assist in determining further interventions to support the student.
  • A behavioral interventionist is available to assist with immediate behavioral concerns occurring within the school day.
  • Both the school counselor and social worker are available to assist in team decisions and providing interventions.
  • Our third-party School-Based Behavioral Health (SBBH) program is available to students and families upon recommendation and is located within JSC for ease of access.
