SchoolWide Character Trait For October
October - Courage
Our character trait for October is Courage — being brave enough to try new things and do what’s right, even when it’s hard. At home, encourage your child to share a time they were brave. Ask: “What is something new you’d like to try, even if it feels a little scary?”
At the end of the month, one student from each classroom will be recognized at our school assembly for showing courage.

The Great Shake Out is Coming - October 16 @ 10:16 am
The Great California Shake Out is coming up! On October 16, our school will join millions across the state in practicing earthquake safety. This annual drill helps students and staff learn how to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” to stay safe during an earthquake. Alarm bells may sound and we are going to practice safe exit and search and rescue. We anticipate this drill to take 30-minutes. It’s a great opportunity to reinforce emergency preparedness in a fun and educational way!
i-Ready Student Reports
Students were administered the i-Ready assessment in both Reading and Math at the beginning of this school year. This diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that identifies students’ strengths and opportunities for growth, which is important information for teachers as they work with students throughout the school year. Please click below for a more detailed description of how to access your child’s i-Ready report (through their i-Ready login on Clever) and what the information in the report means.
For more information about how to read your child’s results, please review this i-Ready Family Center Article: Understanding Your Student’s Diagnostic

Please Help Us Keep Meals Free For Our Students!
Free breakfast and lunch will once again be provided to all our Torrance Unified students this 2025-2026 school year. We are requesting all families to quickly fill out and submit the Universal Benefits Application to ensure we can keep the funding for this program and help all students in our district! You only need to complete one form for your household. The state funding will also support additional academic and social-emotional counseling and reading recovery.
✨ Friendship Club ✨
We will be launching the Friendship Club once a week during lunch starting in October. Friendship Club is a student-driven, teacher-led school inclusion program focusing on the development of organic friendships between all students. Our program is designed to teach students how to harness the power of friendship through social-emotional wellness activities, art, science, physical fitness, and social skills enrichment. When students are making meaningful connections with peers, they are not only learning to build greater peer acceptance in the classroom, but they are also fostering a greater understanding of each other with a sense of safety and well-being on each school campus. This is a completely optional activity, but we would love to have your student join.
A Public Safety Message from the Torrance Police Department (TPD)
The Torrance Police Department reminds families to use designated drop-off and pick-up zones and avoid unsafe areas such as driveways, red zones, crosswalks, and handicapped spaces. Following these guidelines helps keep students safe and prevents parking citations.
Technology Use at TUSD: What Parents Need to Know
As part of Walteria's commitment to safe and effective digital learning, Torrance Unified School District asks all families to be familiar with our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). This policy outlines how students are expected to use school technology responsibly—both to support academic success and to ensure a secure, respectful online environment. Here's what families should know:
Privileges: Access to TUSD Network / technology can be revoked if rules are broken. All use is monitored and subject to review by school staff.
-
Acceptable Use: Technology must be used for school-related activities only—no inappropriate content, use, or unauthorized software.
-
District Responsibilities: The District works to keep systems secure and reliable, but cannot guarantee full protection or accuracy of online information.
-
Web & Email Policies: Student work and photos may be shared online, but only with limited identification. School email is for academic use and monitored by staff.
-
Personal Responsibility: Students must report misuse, keep their login secure, avoid damaging or altering systems, and use technology in ways that are safe and respectful for all.
These guidelines help ensure a safe, productive learning environment for all students. For the entire AUP, please click here.
Be Prepared: Say Something Anonymous Reporting System
As we start the new school year, please remember the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System is available for students to share safety concerns anonymously. This tool helps protect individuals who may be at risk of harming themselves or others. Families and students can access the reporting system via our school website or directly at https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/say-something-tips
This is a great way to work together and keep our community safe!
