From the Principals From the Principals

Dear Winfield Families,

As we approach the final week of the first quarter, we want to take a moment to thank our entire school community for your hard work and dedication. Students have shown tremendous growth, teachers and staff have worked tirelessly to create engaging and supportive classrooms, and families have partnered with us every step of the way. The energy and effort put forth during these first months have laid a strong foundation for the rest of the year, and we are grateful for the teamwork that makes our school such a special place to learn and grow.

With gratitude,
Mrs. Alonzo & Mrs. Hall

Reading Road Trip: Vocabulary Reading Road Trip: Vocabulary

We are excited to continue our Reading Road Trip series, a set of six short videos designed to help parents understand the essential skills children need to become confident readers. You can find the videos on the CPCSC Reading Road Trip page. There are resources linked under each video to find practical ways to help your child grow as a reader. You can also see all six videos on a playlist on our YouTube channel. The second video in the series, Vocabulary, is embedded below!

Grades at the End of the First Nine Weeks Grades at the End of the First Nine Weeks

Crown Point Community Schools officially report grades at the end of each semester so that students have a longer time to demonstrate what they know and can do. Our focus is on mastery learning and supporting a growth mindset in our learners.

The end of the first 9 weeks is Friday, October 10, 2025. While parents can always monitor their child's progress through our Buzz Learning Management System, this review period at the end of the 9 weeks is a great opportunity to assess how your child is doing. There will still be plenty of time to ask for help if needed, complete work, and bring grades up before the end of the semester when grades are finalized. If you have not yet verified your email address in Buzz, this is an important step to ensure that you are receiving all relevant alerts and information about your child’s progress. Instructions for accessing Buzz are linked here. The end of the semester is December 19, 2025.

Please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher should you have any questions about their progress or to learn more about how you can partner with us to support your child’s academic development.

We look forward to welcoming you to Parent Teacher Conferences in early November. During Parent Teacher Conferences, we encourage a collaborative dialogue that highlights how your student is transitioning throughout the first semester. We look forward to addressing questions parents/caregivers have, sharing relevant information (engagement, strengths, NWEA, classwork, socialization, areas for growth), and establishing on-going means for communication.

Let's #BlueUp on Monday, October 6th for World Bully Prevention Day! We invite everyone to participate in a spirit day and wear BLUE to show our commitment in keeping Winfield Elementary a bully-free school.

ILEARN Checkpoints Coming Soon ILEARN Checkpoints Coming Soon

Last year, CPCSC participated in the pilot of Indiana’s Learning Evaluation Assessment Readiness Network (ILEARN) Checkpoints. Starting in 2025-2026, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) requires that all students in grades 3-8 participate in three ILEARN Checkpoints in addition to the ILEARN summative assessment in the spring each year.

The ILEARN Checkpoints are a component of the ILEARN through-year assessment for English/Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The Checkpoints occur seasonally in fall, winter, and spring, with an optional retest opportunity window opening concurrently.

Each Checkpoint has 20-25 questions to show how an individual child is performing on key skills and concepts from the Indiana Academic Standards. Families may refer to this guide that outlines skills and concepts that will be assessed for each Checkpoint for teaching and support as you prepare for these assessments.

The ILEARN Checkpoints help teachers and families understand how students are doing in their learning and guide what they need to work on next. These online tests are taken on your child's Chromebook. Please note that the ILEARN Checkpoints do not affect classroom grades.

Teachers will be communicating about when students will be taking specific checkpoint assessments. We will be communicating with you soon about how to access the Department of Education’s new Family Portal to view your child’s results. For more information about the ILEARN assessment system, please visit the IDOE ILEARN website and/or reference the Family Support and Resources.
