National Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is National Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month (also known as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month), an annual celebration that recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the U.S. The AAPI umbrella term includes cultures from the entire Asian continent—including East, Southeast and South Asia—and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. The H-F Library has gathered books and resources for the school and community to celebrate this special month — click here to learn more!
May is Also Better Speech & Hearing Month
The CDC observes Better Hearing and Speech Month, founded in 1927 by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Each May, this annual event provides an opportunity to raise awareness about hearing and speech problems, and to encourage people to think about their own hearing and get their hearing checked. Early identification and intervention for hearing loss is important. Many people live with unidentified hearing loss, often failing to realize that they are missing certain sounds and words. Checking one’s hearing is the first step toward addressing the issue. Please reach out to H-F's Speech & Language Pathologists for help with student hearing screenings or questions: Lauren Chasey at 708-335-5134, and Lindsey Kulma at 708-335-5699.

Last Friday, May 5, the Boys' Volleyball team faced Bremen H.S. (winning in two games!) in the South Gym for Beat Cancer Night. The team honored freshman Tsion Epley, sister of Varsity junior outside hitter Nathan Epley, who has been fighting a rare form of ovarian cancer and who just returned back to the H-F campus this month. Both the H-F and Bremen teams wore teal socks to show their support and Tsion was named honorary captain for the night and presented with teal flowers by the players. Tsion was also honored by the H-F Band during Wednesday night's final concert, as she is a member of Concert Band.
Last week students in Mr. Banasiak's Physics classes participated in a light lab with spectrometers, which helped them measure and study spectrums of different types of light.
JJC Culinary
Twenty Advanced Culinary students took a college visit to Joliet Junior College on May 5.
Students toured the state-of-the-art facility that includes a bake shop, demonstration rooms, butchery lab, ice sculpture lab and restaurant kitchens. H-F students and H-F teacher Mrs. Clark had the opportunity to work with Chef Katey and make Banana Foster Flambe. They also experienced a blind taste test demonstration with Dr. Bell.
