A Look Back at January! A Look Back at January!

Due to the snow days and days off in the month of January, we put a “pause” on our monthly theme - we just didn’t feel like we were able to give it the attention it deserved and make sure our students had time to understand and demonstrate the positive character trait. For this reason, we have moved our theme of SELF-CONTROL to March. Don’t worry, we are picking right back up where we left off, and the theme for the month of February will be KINDNESS!!

Our Students of the Month for the month of January were:

  • Prek - Rylee Eley & Myles Pettigrew
  • Kindergarten - Jared Coffta
  • First Grade - Sky Lambert
  • Second Grade - Jamison Dorner
  • Third Grade - Eve Barren
  • Fourth Grade - Ivy Domes

Our Attica Elementary PTG hosted a great family yoga night in the multipurpose room! We had a great turn out and appreciated the lesson from Emily at Bliss Yoga.

We couldn’t be more excited to share that this year our 4th grade students have had the opportunity to take part in the high school musical production, The Wizard of Oz!! A special thank you to Mrs. Melissa Struzik for working with Mr. Gardner to make this happen, and for spending time with the students here and at the high school preparing for the big show! We can’t wait to watch our students shine!

Be on the lookout! Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Lathigee, and Mrs. Camp’s fourth grade class will be performing the National Anthem in sign language at the Varsity Basketball game on Friday, February 6th. They have been working hard with Miss Rachel Schauf, BOCES Teacher of the Deaf, to prepare!

Our theme for the month of February will be Kindness:

  • We can use kind words with everyone we meet.

  • We can include others and make them feel welcome.

  • We can do something nice for someone without being asked.

  • We can treat others the way we want to be treated.

February is Kindness Month, a perfect time to focus on helping children understand the power of being kind. In elementary school, children are learning how their words and actions affect others, and simple acts of kindness—such as sharing, including others, using respectful language, and helping a friend—can make a big difference. When kindness is encouraged at home and at school, children build empathy, strengthen friendships, and develop positive character traits that will support them throughout their lives. Thank you for partnering with us to model and reinforce kindness every day.

As a school district, we have established a committee to review our grading practices, why we grade/what we are measuring, and how we communicate student learning to families.

We are asking parents and caregivers to please take a moment to complete the following survey. Thank you for your continued support of our district and students!

First grade has been enjoying learning from our classroom visitors. From BOCES we have been working on Logic with fun games and activities, and with Cornell Cooperative Extension we discovered how important earthworms are to soil composition, and how healthy soil impacts the foods we are able to grow and eat. We are also deep into our animal research projects. We have chosen an animal and are researching aspects of that animal to include in an informational report. We are focusing on their habitat, characteristics, what they eat, and some fun facts about the animal. These are month long projects and it is very exciting to see all of our hard work come together into a final report. First grade has also been learning about the sun and shadows in science. We have learned why shadows move and how the sun can help you tell the time of day.

Second graders are on an exciting journey learning about the American West, a region that stretches from the middle of the country all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Students are discovering the many different landscapes found in the West—including mountains, plains, deserts, and forests—and how the land helped shape how people lived long ago. This learning will also connect to our spring concert, giving students a fun way to share their knowledge.

Through engaging stories and informational texts, students learn about Native American tribes such as the Lakota, Hopi, and Nez Percé, exploring how these communities lived in harmony with the land and continue to honor their traditions today. Students also read about settlers traveling west in covered wagons, the challenges of life on the Oregon Trail, and important moments like the Pony Express and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad.

In addition, students explore the beauty of the West through stories about wildlife and nature, including soaring over the Sierra Nevada, as well as learning about artists and leaders who helped shape and protect the region. They meet inspiring individuals such as wagon makers, business owners, artists, and women who fought for equal rights.

As students read these stories, they are also building strong reading skills by practicing new phonics patterns and learning how to read longer and more complex words. This unit brings together reading, history, geography, and the arts, helping students better understand the people, places, and stories that make the American West so special.

Third grade is wrapping up our Stone Fox novel study that correlates with the opinion writing piece at the end of the novel study, "Who is the hero of Stone Fox?" We also have Yummies visiting our school to have our grade level participate in their school community competition of which student can create the best flavor of ice cream for Yummies to make!
Fourth grade students are continuing to work on their National Park project. In place of a traditional multi-paragraph essay, we have chosen to integrate more technology by having students create a presentation using Canva or Google Slides. Through this project, students will also practice their presentation skills as they prepare to present their information next week.

Hello Families!

February may be known for Valentine’s Day, but all month long we’re celebrating something even bigger: KINDNESS! 💕

National Kindness Month is the perfect time to remind students that small, thoughtful actions can make a BIG difference—at school, at home, and in our community.

🌟 What Is Kindness Month?

Kindness Month is all about practicing compassion, empathy, and respect. It’s not just about being “nice”—it’s about choosing actions that help others feel valued and included.

💡 What Does Kindness Look Like?

Kindness can be big OR small. Here are some kid-friendly examples:

  • Helping a sibling with homework

  • Saying “thank you” or “I’m sorry”

  • Inviting someone new to play

  • Writing a kind note or drawing a picture for someone

  • Sharing toys, supplies, or smiles 😊

Encourage children to notice how kindness makes people feel—including themselves!

🎲 Family Kindness Game: Kindness Bingo! Try this quick and easy game at home:

How to Play:

  1. Draw a 3x3 grid on paper (or make one together).

  2. In each square, write a different kind act (examples below).

  3. Work as a family to complete as many squares as you can during February!

Kindness Bingo Ideas:

  • Give someone a compliment

  • Help with chores without being asked

  • Write a thank-you note

  • Share with a friend or sibling

  • Say something encouraging

  • Hold the door for someone

  • Clean up together

  • Make someone laugh

  • Donate a toy or book

💥 Bonus challenge: Complete this activity and bring it into school to show Miss Crowley for a surprise!

💖 Let’s Keep Kindness Going!

February is a great reminder that kindness isn’t just for one month—it’s something we can practice every day. Thank you for helping us grow caring, thoughtful, and compassionate kids.

Let’s make February (and beyond!) a month full of kind hearts and happy moments!

Warmly,
The Mental Health Department

Miss Crowley & Dr. Marr

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM), a nationwide observance dedicated to promoting healthy habits for healthy smiles. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children in the U.S., but it is almost entirely preventable.

To help our students stay healthy and ready to learn, we encourage families to practice the 2min2x rule: brushing for two minutes, twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste.

Quick Tips for Healthy Smiles:

  • Brush Twice Daily: Spend two minutes brushing every morning and before bed.

  • Pick "Tooth-Friendly" Snacks: Choose cheese, plain yogurt, or crunchy vegetables instead of sugary treats.

  • Drink More Water: Water helps rinse away sugar and often contains fluoride to strengthen tooth enamel.

Did You Know?

  • Teeth are like fingerprints: No two people have the same set of teeth—your smile is truly one-of-a-kind.

  • Enamel is armor: Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, even stronger than bone.

Snails are the dental kings: While humans have 32 adult teeth, a garden snail can have over 14,000 tiny teeth

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s health, please call Nurse Dispenza at 585-591-0400 extension 2238 or email at MDispenza@AtticaCSD.org

February is here and we are welcoming in this short month of school with hope of a little less snow!

The cafeteria staff is serving up some delicious meals for our students this month to keep their hearts warm and their bellies full during long, cold winter days. On this month's menu we have a lot of usual suspects that we know our students enjoy, like hot ham and cheese on a pretzel roll, build a waffle day, and nachos grande! Always a hit, K-12!

Fridays will still see homemade pizzas on the menu as we test out a variety of choices to see what the kids like best. As always, students will "build" their own meal on Tuesdays, and enjoy locally sourced NY products on Thursdays. Additionally, all student's getting school lunch on February 13th will be offered a special treat in celebration of Valentine's day! Students will also see taste tests return this month after a short hiatus - seeing some new menu item ideas as well as farm to school related tastings!

An important note regarding lunch accounts on myschoolbucks.com. We have found that the system tends to be a few days behind in populating data, so please take that into consideration when checking your student's account balance. When you send funds into the school to be added to their account, those funds are immediately available for use but may not reflect on MSB right away. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding your student's school lunch account balance, please email the Food Service Manager at kgeorge3@atticacsd.org.
