Concept Codeathon Champions

Codeathon is a computer science design challenge open to Concept Schools students in grades K-12. Codeathon is a hybrid event where students work collaboratively in person to develop a computer science solution to a real-world issue in just 2 weeks and present/submit their solution virtually!

Our very own team, The CoderCyclones, worked hard to earn the 1st place award! Our CoderCylones beat out 16 other Concept Schools for the title. Mr. Kamal, the team's coach, says, "This is a significant achievement for our school, and I am extremely proud of our students' dedication and hard work." Go Cyclones!

Concept Spoken Word

On March 18, five of our students participated in the Concept School's Spoken Word event in Indianapolis, IN. Junior Mileena Rivera along with seniors Kennedy Short, Teresa Wyatt, Maria Ramirez, and Adam Bentley prepared original pieces to present to an audience of judges and peers. The experience highlighted these students' desire to further enhance their high school experience while providing them an experience they can tout on college applications and on work resumes.

Kennedy took first place in her category with her piece titled "A Generation of Change." She and Teresa then teamed up for a piece titled "Shame On Me" that won them third place in the team category.

Congratulations not to just the award winners but to all the participants for taking the time to stretch their skills.

New Stage Lights

Our Dr. Yakup Cetin Auditorium is place where so many memories are created. It has been a stage for award ceremonies, graduations, plays, musicals, dedications, assemblies, and so much more. While having a stage is wonderful, the overall productions have been limited because of the deteriorating sound and lighting in this soon to be 55 year old auditorium.

Mr. Nickel, our IT expert, set out to change that. Last year, Mr. Nickell updated the sound. When we went to get our lights replaced, we found out it was extremely costly. Even with schoolwide fundraising this was a hefty goal. Mr. Nickell talked with lighting technicians, did research, and scoured the internet to become a how-to guru in lighting.

With the fundraising money that was available, Mr. Nickell was able to purchase and install our stage lighting. Our stage is back to it's original glory, and ready to host memories for decades of students to come.

CYSP Visits The Botanical Gardens

This month our CYSP groups visited The Cleveland Botanical Gardens. The weather was perfect, and the gardens were extra beautiful because the tulips were in peak bloom!

This trip helped to engage the senses, learn about sustainability and types of plant biomes, offer a relaxing environment, and introduce our students to native plants. CYSP will be going camping for their final trip of the year.

If your student is in grades 5-12 and is interested in joining CYSP, please be on the look out for information at the beginning of the school year on finding a mentor and joining a group. For more information about or CYSP program click the button below.

Horizon Takes Over Rebmans

State testing has been in full swing. Our 2nd-4th grade students have been working really hard and took a well needed break. Our students headed down to Rebman's Recreation on Oberlin Avenue to a bowl a couple of games. This field trip was one way to celebrate their hard work while bonding with their fellow classmates.

Game On!

Bowling isn't the only reward and break our students had. This year's testing theme was 'Game On'! To celebrate, students had the opportunity to earn time in the game truck. Check the photos of students below getting their game on.

5th-8th Basketball Camp

Our Basketball Camp for grades 5-8 was a success. Coach Harris set up a more skill intensive basketball camp for some of our older students this year. Our students were fortunate enough to work with Professional Basketball Player & Clinician, DaVonte Harris.

Coach Harris wasn't the only one working with the kids. Mrs. Harvey and Mr. Steven joined in as well. The students were working hard and having a great time doing it.

Student Nominated for R.A. Horn Outstanding Achievement Award

The R. A. Horn Outstanding Achievement Award for a Student is presented to one exemplary special education student from each of Ohio's 16 State Support Team regions. This award was established 25 years ago by the Ohio Department of Education in honor of the late Dr. Raymond A.

12th grade student De'Antae Kirk Jr. was nominated for the award this year. While ultimately De'Antae was no chosen as the recipient of this award, it is still an honor to be nominated. De'Antae was still honored with a Lamp of Knowledge medal and certificate to honor this achievement.
