Mr. Smith's 6th Grade Spotlight
August 22nd, 2025
Welcome! (First Day Reminders)
Hi Northstar families,
It was so great to meet so many students and families at our Back to School Bash yesterday! The energy and excitement around Haven were wonderful to see, and our team is looking forward to welcoming everyone back on the first day of school, Monday, August 25th.
Doors will open at 7:50 AM, as they will each day, and students should gather in the recess area outside Door #15. Our educator team will come outside to welcome students, and we will line up by homeroom. If your child doesn’t yet know their schedule, Ms. Karl, Ms. Sobhani, and I will be out front and ready to help.
Many students ride their bikes to school, and we are glad to support that independence. Bicycles can be locked to the long rack located by Door #15. Please be sure your child has a sturdy lock and knows how to use it.
Personal electronics, phones, and smart watches are expected to remain in lockers and turned off throughout the school day. If a student does not follow this expectation, their device will be collected and held in the office until a parent or guardian picks it up. We have this policy so that students can stay focused on learning and connected to peers and teachers without unnecessary distractions.
Students will receive lockers on Tuesday, August 26th. Until then, students may carry their backpacks on the first day.
Schedules are essentially finalized, though there may be small adjustments during the first week as we balance classes and meet individual needs. Please note that we do not make schedule changes based on teacher or peer preference; this helps us remain consistent and equitable for all students.
For lunch and recess, all 6th graders will eat first and then head outside for recess during 6th period (11:33 AM – 12:13 PM). Students may sit with friends during lunch, and I will be present during the first few days to guide routines and maximize time for both eating and play.
Dismissal each day is at 3:05 PM. Most 6th graders will exit through Door #15. Please take time to discuss with your child where you will meet if you are picking them up. Students in grades 6–8 may walk home independently, as is common at the middle school level.
I also want to emphasize the importance of communication. As a parent and an educator, I know that strong communication between home and school makes a big difference. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s teachers whenever you need—our team is here to partner with you.
Finally, I ask that we all extend patience, flexibility, and understanding as we begin the school year. The transition to middle school brings excitement as well as big feelings for students and families. At Haven, we embody the Big 5 and support one another through this important stage of growth.
We are excited for a strong start on Monday and can’t wait to welcome your children into the building.
Warmly,
Best,
Thomas Smith

Welcome from the 6th grade Team!
Good afternoon and welcome to the new school year!
As the first day of school is just around the corner, we’d like to share the sixth-grade teams for the upcoming school year. There will be three core sixth-grade teams, with some new and returning educators. Joining our IES support team this year are, Mr. Timothy Moony, Mr. Ben Gellar, Ms. Jennifer Ofner, Ms. Sharon Dershin, and Ms. Phoebe Baik. Mr. Matthew Pavich will be joining the sixth grade social studies team, and will be working with Ms. Strzelecki’s social studies students while she is on maternity leave.
On Monday morning, students should line up outside of Door #15, which will be the 6th grade entrance door for the school year. They should look for their first-period homeroom teachers. Please encourage your child to bring a printed copy of their schedule on Monday. Haven staff will be on hand to help students find their schedules as well.
We look forward to a successful start to the school year!
Leave of Absence (Ms. Groesch)
Welcome to a new school year at Haven! We’re so excited to begin this journey together and can’t wait to see all the growth, learning, and memorable experiences ahead for our students.
We also want to share an update about 6th grade Social Studies. Ms. Groesch will be starting the year on leave and is scheduled to return later this semester. In the meantime, Guest Educator Mr. Matt Pavich will be stepping in to support our students.
Mr. Pavich is a familiar face in our building. He’s been a long-time member of Haven’s guest educator team, and as a parent of Haven alumni, he’s deeply connected to our Evanston community. This fall, he’ll be co-teaching with Ms. Qader in four of Ms. Groesch’s six classes, with additional support from Mr. Williams in the first morning block. We’re fortunate to have such a strong team of educators already planned for this space, and we know Mr. Pavich will bring both experience and enthusiasm to the classroom.
Please join us in giving Mr. Pavich a warm Haven welcome as we kick off an exciting school year together!
