"DON'T SAY YOU CAN'T": TENNIS TEAM CREDITS COACH NELSON FOR A SEASON TO REMEMBER "DON'T SAY YOU CAN'T": TENNIS TEAM CREDITS COACH NELSON FOR A SEASON TO REMEMBER

The Providence Hall Girls Tennis Team wrapped up one of its strongest and most inspiring seasons yet, earning multiple state qualifiers and seeing two doubles teams advance deep into the tournament.

Competing in a tough new region, the team rose to every challenge through determination, teamwork, and the steady guidance of Coach Ryan Nelson.

From the first practice to the final match, Coach Nelson’s positivity and calm presence made all the difference. Lyla Cabarcas, who played doubles this season, shared, “Coach Nelson has helped me improve so much as a player and a partner. He’s so patient and kind, and he can always make me feel better after a bad match. I learned to deal with my mental blocks and stay positive. ‘Don’t say you’re sorry’ and ‘don’t say you can’t’ were the things he said most—and they completely changed my mindset.”

For Halle Francis, this was her first year playing singles on varsity, a challenge that tested her both mentally and emotionally. “Singles can feel lonely, but Coach Nelson always helped me get out of that funk,” she said. “He reminded me that losses don’t define you as a player or as a person. And when I struggled, my teammates were there for me too. That’s what I love about this team, we show up for each other.”

Lhayaa Premkishore said that moving into a tougher region at first seemed daunting, but the team’s progress exceeded all expectations. “He not only focused on our technique but also on our mindset,” she said. “That helped me stay positive and push further. By the end of the season, I truly enjoyed every match, wins and losses included. I’m so proud of how far we all came.”

For Lillian Colasurdo, the team’s success was rooted in their coach’s belief in them. “Coach Nelson pushed us to do things we never thought we could, like making it to state,” she said. “He was there smiling when we won and when we lost. He wasn’t just our coach, he’s someone we all look up to as a person. The season wouldn’t have been what it was without him.”

Emelia Fry echoed that gratitude, saying, “Coach Nelson has helped me so much this season, he’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had for any sport. He’s patient and kind and helps each person individually with what they’re struggling with. He always tells us he’s proud of us while encouraging us to do our best. I’ve learned and improved so much from what he’s taught me, and I love every girl on the team. Going to state was amazing, and I loved playing with Lyla again this year.”

Coach Nelson, in turn, expressed how deeply this season has meant to him. “The most rewarding part was sharing the journey, the smiles, laughter, sweat, and even the tears,” he said. “I may have four boys at home, but this season, I’ve gained ten daughters. This group has heart, grit, and a relentless desire to compete. They’ve built a culture that values hard work, positivity, and never giving up.”

Through grit, gratitude, and a shared love for the game, the Providence Hall Girls Tennis Team proved that their greatest victory wasn’t just advancing at state, it was growing together under the guidance of a coach who reminded them every day to believe in themselves and never say they can’t.

DEBATE TEAM LEADS WITH PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE DEBATE TEAM LEADS WITH PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE

This year, the Providence Hall Debate Team has shown what true leadership looks like. Operating entirely as a student-run program after the departure of their advisor. Despite the challenge, the team hasn’t missed a beat. In fact, they’ve grown even closer.

“It was stressful at times,” said Taylor Hastings, Debate Events Captain, “but with our experience as a team having to work together in previous years, it’s far more doable. We were afraid the team would be lost at first, but admin has helped us immensely.”

Working alongside Taylor, Nivetha Karthikeyan (President) and Ada Jigjid (Leadership) have led with energy and purpose. “When we lost our advisor, it felt like the whole world got turned upside down,” said Nivetha. “But the true meaning of Speech and Debate came to light. Perseverance, resilience, and teamwork all snapped into place. Our presidency’s main goal has been maintaining harmony and progress within the team.”

The leadership group has kept practices on track with help from Mr. Steve Porter, who provides a room and logistical support. “They’ve used this time to get closer together as a team,” Porter said. “They’ve mentored each other, and the coolest thing is that they never gave up.”

Even without a formal coach, the team has continued to compete successfully. “We’re just a bunch of nerds who have come together with similar motivations and a heck of a lot of school pride,” Taylor added. That pride is visible in their continued tournament placements and the creation of new team traditions like Lessons & Laughs, a post-tournament debrief that mixes learning with fun.

Veteran debaters like Xavier Grant and Rhiley Barto have also helped carry the torch. “Our debate team has always been cultivated and maintained by the members themselves,” Xavier said. “That freedom for creative ideas really defines who we are.” Rhiley agreed, adding, “It’s chaotic, but awesome. Everyone’s always there for each other. I’ve learned how to lead, give feedback, and disagree respectfully.”

Through humor, hard work, and a shared commitment to each other, the PHHS Debate Team has proven that leadership isn’t about titles, it’s about passion, persistence, and teamwork. Or as Porter summed it up: “They’ve kept going, no matter what, and they’re letting their passion guide them.”

Celebrate Your Patriot Pride with a Personalized Yard Sign! Celebrate Your Patriot Pride with a Personalized Yard Sign!

Providence Hall High School is excited to celebrate all the incredible students who represent our school through athletics and activities — both on the field and beyond it!

This year, we’re offering personalized PHHS yard signs so families can proudly show their support for their student’s hard work, dedication, and school spirit. Whether your student plays on the field, performs on stage, marches with the band, leads in Student Council, or serves in NJROTC — this is your chance to showcase their Patriot pride right at home!

For our fall athletes, the signs can be customized with sport, name, and jersey number, making each one uniquely theirs. Activities and programs without jersey numbers will have beautifully designed, general signs that still highlight their team or group.

Signs are just $20 each, and proceeds from this campaign go directly to benefit PHHS students and programs.

Pre-orders are open now.

Thank you for helping us celebrate every Patriot who contributes to the heart of Providence Hall — from the athletes who give their all on the field to the students who make our school community shine through leadership, service, and the arts.
