Math: Mrs. Crutchfield and Mrs. Shreve

6th Grade Math- Mrs. Shreve and Mrs. Crutchfield

In October, we will be starting our third unit! This unit will focus on equivalencies among fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and percents, as well as comparing and ordering positive rational numbers. Our unit test will be on October 23rd. Students may complete test corrections to earn back half of the points they missed if they are not satisfied with their test score. Students should talk with Mrs. Crutchfield or Mrs. Shreve if they would like to complete test corrections.

Please remember to check the Week at a Glance in Canvas regularly to stay up to date on assignments, upcoming activities, and important reminders. You can also check Infinite Campus regularly to monitor your child’s grades and progress.

Unit 2 Test Corrections are in Canvas if students were not satisfied with their score and want to use one of their 3 retakes for the semester. I pulled a group of students in during Mustang Mania and worked with them but anyone is able to do it. It can be found under the assignment tab in Canvas.

In October, we will be starting our third unit, Expressions. Our unit test will be on October 23rd.

Hello everyone, and welcome to October! Your students are finishing up learning the 8 Parts of Speech and Subject-Verb Agreement. We will take our Post-Test covering these concepts next week. It will be exciting to see how much they have grown over the past 7 weeks. When we get back from Fall Break, our focus will be learning how to write compound sentences. We will also be starting our Philanthropy Project, which includes writing an informative essay (letter). This is a class favorite! Blessings to everyone, and please reach out if you have any questions!

Science: Mrs. Shafer and Mrs. Thornton

We are currently finishing our Thermal Energy Unit. Students have studied heat transfer by Conduction, Convection, and Radiation. They have also learned about insulative and conductive materials and how they impact heat transfer.

This month, we are creating a STEM project where students will design and create a model to shelter an endangered species of penguin in the "Save the Penguins" Thermal Energy Project. This a test grade and will be divided up into 5 parts: Research, Materials Testing, Design/Building, Evaluation, and Reflection. Students will be asked to bring recyclable materials from home to build their shelters. Potential items may include small cardboard boxes, cotton balls, aluminum foil, felt/fabric, and styrofoam. Check Canvas for the rubric and project details.

Please make sure you are helping your student check Canvas for assignments and lessons. If they are absent, they will need to go to our Science Course and check the Modules.

Math and Reading Success

In 6th grade Math & Reading Success class, Math students will continue to focus on multiplying and dividing positive and negative integers in real-life situations while also ensuring that students are still working through their grade level material and making up any incomplete or missing assignments. For Reading students, they will be focusing on writing skills as well as reading passages to focus on author's purpose, main idea, and supporting details. Bellwork for all students continues to be ReadTheory quizzes, adapted Freckle assignments to build fluency in skills, and Wordle to build vocabulary/research skills. Students go to the Media Center every Monday to check out a book for Silent Sustained Reading.

In 6th grade Reading Success, we are continuing Level 1 of the Third Quest series and working on prefixes, suffixes, and affixes to build words that we can break down to sound out. They are also working on spelling words that have the same sounds but are spelled differently. Comprehension strategies that we are working on this month are visualization, characterization (putting ourselves in the shoes of the character), and looking back in the text. Bellwork for all students continues to be ReadTheory quizzes, adapted Freckle assignments to build fluency in skills, and Wordle to build vocabulary/research skills. Students go to the Media Center every Wednesday to check out a book for Silent Sustained Reading.

Counselor's Caring Corner

Our 6th graders are off to a great start as Mustangs! The counseling suit has many events coming their way in September. One, is SAEBRS Survey. You have already received emails regarding SAEBRS and opting out if you wish. Counselors use SAEBRS to help students receive services that we might not realize they need such as individual counseling by our LPC's or small groups with me. We will also present SOS (Signs of Suicide) in September which you can also opt out your child. SOS is a great way to encourage students to seek a trusted adult.

I am enjoying watching your children interact in the hallways and at recess. They are very respectful, and I feel blessed to get to be their counselor and walk their middle school journey with them and you.

Weekly Reminders :)
