📕What We'll Be Learning in April📕 📕What We'll Be Learning in April📕

In Reading...

In Unit 7, "Making a Difference," our 3rd graders are exploring how individuals and communities can take action to improve the world around them. Through stories like Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table and The Storyteller's Candle, students are learning about the power of teamwork and environmental stewardship. We are focusing on identifying the central idea of a text and analyzing how characters' actions contribute to a sequence of events. Students are also building their academic vocabulary with words like conserve, recycle, and community to better describe the impact of positive change.

In Math...

Our focus for Math is Test Prep. We have been working on practice tests across the third grade curriculum. During this month, we will be focusing on cube patterns, arrays, and multiplies of 10 in conjunction with test prep. Students will be learning strategies to improve their testing ability and building stamina. Please have your child continue to practice their multiplication facts everyday!

In Writing...

We will continue preparing for the ELA State Test. Students will be working on writing short responses and extended responses. They will read a passage and answer a question that requires a response that includes details to support their answers. Students will also learn test strategies to help them while taking the ELA State Test. Also, our writers are moving beyond just reading about change-makers and are becoming advocates themselves! Students are learning how to craft persuasive letters and essays that address real-world issues they care about. We are focusing on supporting opinions with strong evidence and using "voice" to connect with an audience. By the end of the module, your child will have the tools to express their ideas clearly and convince others to join their cause.

In SEL...

During the month of April, we will be focusing on empathy and kindness. Students will learn how to use kindness to make and maintain friendships. The goals of this unit are to explain how empathy and kindness can help build friendships and for students to be able to identify acts of kindness for others by thinking about how another person feels and what they might want or need. We will be role playing different scenarios to deepen understanding.

In Social Studies...

Third graders will continue their case study on different countries by exploring folklore, cuisine, and inventions.

In Gym...

When we come back from Spring Break the classes will put together all the skills they practiced to play a friendly end of the unit Soccer Game. After this unit, we will introduce Track and Field to the students. In this unit we will go over various activities such as different types of running and jumping. We help the students improve on their stamina for running and their power for their jumps. Please make sure that your child is properly dressed for Gym.

In Science...

Some 3rd classes have already taken the end of unit assessment. If your child, has not taken it yet, they will be taking it in April. Once they are graded, they will be sent home. 3rd grade scientists are working on the Life Cycle Investigation. When the investigation is completed, they will begin the last unit of study called, Interacting Forces. In this unit, students will learn about simple machines and complex machines and what happens when objects interact. To support your child at home, talk about what simple machines they know about.

In Music...

We will learn about minor tonality. We will learn the eighth-note rhythm. We will learn about the composers Bach and Mozart and listen to their music.

In Art...

Third grade artists will use art forms such as printmaking and cardboard sculpture to invent robots that can perform helpful tasks.
