CES to Start Accelerated Reader in January!
What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a tool designed to test students of their comprehension after reading a variety of books. Students earn points that are determined by the length and difficulty level of each book.
Why is CES implementing Accelerated Reader?
We are hoping to encourage students to read in and out of the classroom! Having a system that helps teachers and staff track what books students are reading and how many books students are reading will allow us to reach our reading goals. As students are learning to read, practice is important to continue to build their reading skills. As students become proficient in foundational reading skills, we encourage them to find authors, series, and genres they love to become lifelong readers and learners.
How will CES implement Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader has been implemented in a variety of ways in many schools. Our goal is to influence students to want to read and fall in love with books. We will create a "points club", starting at 5 points, and reaching up to 100 points. Each Point Club will have a reward specifically chosen for that club status. Rewards will vary from candy bars, to a movie treat, pizza parties, and even a trip to Barnes and Noble for a new book.
Students will set their own goals of what point club they are working towards. Staff will not dictate how many points students need to have- students will be leading their learning with this project. As always, we will encourage and help any students choosing books, picking books at their reading level, and even providing a space and time for those who need help!
How do we get started?
Students will be encouraged to check out books to take home for Christmas Break. If you are eager to get started, simply have your child read throughout the break and let their teacher know when we come back, they are ready to take a test and start earning their points! If you ever have questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or Mrs. Littrell!
