Shaping Creativity: How Pottery and Art are Bringing Students Together
At Plato Academy, the arts are more than just an elective—they’re a way for students to explore their creativity, build skills, and connect with one another. Recently, seventh and eighth graders from the art and music programs had the opportunity to visit the Ringling Museum, an experience made possible through a scholarship that covered transportation costs. With enthusiastic chaperones and curious students, the trip was a success, sparking meaningful discussions and a deeper appreciation for the arts.
Back in the classroom, pottery has become the latest creative obsession. What started as a tool for the school’s clay club has grown into a schoolwide movement, with students eager to get their hands on the pottery wheel. Even Principal Sutera, a potter herself, has joined in, inspiring students to try their hand at the craft. Whether working with air-dry clay at their desks or experimenting with a digital pottery app, students are embracing the art form with excitement.
To meet the growing demand, a second pottery wheel is on the way, ensuring more students get the chance to learn this timeless skill. Middle schoolers, in particular, have taken to it with dedication, creating thoughtful, hand-painted pieces for their families. Last year, yarn and finger weaving brought students together—this year, pottery is proving to be the great creative equalizer. With each turn of the wheel, students aren’t just shaping clay; they’re shaping memories, friendships, and a deeper love for the arts.

Celebrating Student Success at Plato Academy!
At Plato Academy Schools, we take pride in our students' achievements, and this month, we’re shining the spotlight on two exceptional readers who have shown remarkable growth and dedication!
Izayah, 5th Grade – Plato Academy Clearwater
Izayah’s love for reading has truly blossomed this year! His commitment to improving fluency and comprehension is evident in his academic performance, and his enthusiasm for learning inspires everyone around him. Izayah takes pride in his progress and actively participates in class, showcasing his growing confidence as a reader.
Robert, 4th Grade – Plato Academy St. Petersburg
Robert has made incredible strides in reading, expanding his vocabulary, and improving his comprehension of challenging texts. His hard work is reflected in his FAST assessment, where he progressed from a low Level 1 to a high Level 2—just seven points away from Level 3! Outside of academics, Robert is also a talented dancer and singer, delighting us all at the winter concert.
Keep up the amazing work—you’re inspiring us all!
Easton - Plato Academy St. Petersburg
Congratulations to Easton, a student at our St. Petersburg campus, for his outstanding effort in our Read at Home Plan!
Last semester, Easton completed an impressive 15 passages and graphic organizers, the highest number submitted. His commitment to reading and engaging with the material demonstrates both hard work and a love for learning.
Carter is one of our outstanding sixth-grade gifted students at Plato Academy Largo, known for his involvement in various campus activities, including the Varsity Soccer Team and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). He has been part of the gifted program since second grade, and his enthusiasm for learning has shone brightly throughout his academic journey.
Carter is our Spotlight Gifted Student because of his unwavering passion for learning and his dedication to excellence. This passion is evident in the classroom, especially through the creative projects he has contributed to, such as his impressive Ski Ball game for our annual Cardboard Carnival. Carter took on a leadership role during this project, guiding his team to stay focused and successfully complete their work for the event.
Recently, Carter has been channeling his love for math into his Passion Project in Gifted Class. His goal is to use his talent in mathematics to support his peers by offering peer tutoring to help them gain confidence in the subject.
In addition to his academic achievements, Carter is a positive role model at PAL. He exemplifies our monthly character traits and demonstrates service to others through his active participation in NJHS. We are so proud of Carter and his contributions to our school community!
Eden, a talented 7th grader, has been a part of the Gifted Program at Plato Academy Tarpon Springs since 2nd grade. Eden exemplifies strong leadership and teamwork, consistently demonstrating these qualities both in the classroom and on the volleyball court. She is a self-advocate who pushes creative boundaries while inspiring those around her. Adding to her strengths is her delightful personality, sharp wit, and incredible internal drive.
Eden’s creativity and dedication shine through in her gifted projects. Notable highlights include her imaginative Puppet Show project (pictured), her Ocean Careers Project in 3rd grade (pictured), her Ancient Roman Day at the Forum project in 4th grade (pictured), her captivating Stop-Motion Film project in 6th grade, and most recently, her outstanding Podcast Project.
Eden’s podcasting skills are so exceptional that she is among a select group of students recommended for a National Podcast Competition! Watching her grow, thrive, and excel in the gifted program has been an absolute honor.
Sasha K. and Emily M., 4th graders at Trinity Plato, are incredibly creative and excel both independently and as a team. Their out-of-the-box thinking is evident in their impressive Art and Gifted projects. Both are kind, passionate, and dedicated to their work.
