Preparing students for severe weather Preparing students for severe weather

Red Wing Public Schools will take advantage of Severe Weather Awareness Week, April 13-17, to review classroom procedures. We invite families to do so at home.

Minnesota has scheduled statewide tornado drills for 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. Thursday, April 16. Outdoor warning sirens will sound in a simulated tornado warning. The first drill is intended for places of work. The evening drill is intended for second shift workers and families.

Red Wing Public Schools will hold drills this month as schedules allow, avoiding concerts, field trips, etc.

Minnesota experiences an average of 46 tornadoes per year, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. In 2022, 83 tornadoes struck Minnesota, which is the most in a year since the all-time record of 113, set in 2010. Most tornadoes occur between May and August, though they have been spotted as early as March 6 in 2017 and as late as Dec. 15 in 2021, when the state recorded 22 confirmed tornadoes.

This is part of our Standard Response Protocol

Understanding the threat and knowing what to do when a tornado is approaching can save lives.

People in the Midwest know that when a siren sounds and the National Weather Services issues a tornado warning, they should take shelter. Standard Response Protocol or SRP calls this the SHELTER action, and that's the word our district would use in the case of a tornado.

There are five actions in all: HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, EVACUATE and SHELTER.

The Northern Lights Collaborative developed and facilitated a workshop April 7 specifically for RWPS AICE Hub participants. Over the four-hour session, teachers and administrators worked to broaden their shared understanding of AI-integrated computing education and its connection to the district’s vision for preparing students to be critical thinkers, effective communicators, and technologically literate innovators.

Grounded in the Portrait of a Graduate, the session moved Flight Path 2030 from vision to implementation by engaging staff in outlining core competencies, exploring computing-integrated lesson examples, and identifying priorities for Year 2 (2026-2027).

Yummy! Open wide, baby

Teacher Kim Mann (left) and three students -- plus four others hidden behind the tarp and doing the actually feeding -- were among those up for the silly "Feed the Baby" challenge that was part of this month's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports assembly. PBIS is a proactive, three-tiered framework designed to improve student behavior, academic achievement, and school climate. The assembly Friday celebrated students' successes and produced plenty of laughter.
