#6 Meet Grandpa Rodger 👋

If you’ve ever wandered upstairs in the K-5 main building, just to the right at the top of the steps, you might notice a cozy little corner. That’s where you’ll find Grandpa Rodger, our very own foster grandparent, spending time with K-3 students twice a week. For the kids, it feels like playtime. For Grandpa Rodger, it’s the best part of his week ❤️.

At 92 years young 🎉, Grandpa Rodger is part of the Foster Grandparent Program, a federally funded AmeriCorps Seniors initiative that connects older adults with schools to mentor and tutor young learners. He first joined our school in 2011, after seeing an ad in the newspaper, and his wife, Joanne, encouraged him to give it a try. Since then, he’s become one of the most familiar and beloved faces on campus—bringing laughter, creativity, and encouragement to our youngest learners.

Students especially love the games he creates, from homemade board games to Name Bingo cards made just for their class. They treasure the bookmarks he draws and light up when he makes them laugh. But what Grandpa Rodger enjoys most is seeing the magical “aha!” moment 💡 on a child’s face when something new suddenly clicks.

One of his greatest joys happens outside of school, when former students spot him around town . Whether at the grocery store or on the sidewalk, kids—sometimes ones he first met over a decade ago—still excitedly call out, “Grandpa Rodger!”

He often says he couldn’t have picked a better place to spend the last two decades of his life: “It’s a whole lot of really nice kids. A great place to be.”

And we couldn’t agree more 💙.

Check out the social and emotional tips 💡 your student learned from Miss Riojas’ classroom visits last month, and use them to encourage growth at home.

Kindergarten: Feelings Detectives 🕵️‍♀️🕵️‍♂️

Kindergarteners are looking for facial/body clues to name the emotion they might be seeing/feeling.

How can you help? Name the emotions as they come up in your interactions with your student and share what the feeling looks like for you.

Example:

👉 “I see your eyebrows are down and your arms are crossed. You might be feeling frustrated 😠. Sometimes I feel like that too when things don’t go the way I want.”

👉 “You look really excited! Your eyes are wide and you’re smiling big 😃—just like I do when I’m excited!”

1st: Self-Awareness

1st graders worked on naming emotions, noticing how their bodies respond, and calming strategies. Tip: Ask your student about Hot Cocoa Breathing, Balloon Belly Breathing, and Rocks & Socks. Practice these together and encourage them when they begin to feel upset.

2/3: Character 🌟

Students learned about the things that make them unique (their interests and talents). They explored how their unique qualities are strengths 💪.
Tip: Share with your student the things you notice they do well—it builds confidence and pride.

4/5: Self-Awareness & Problem-Solving🔑

Students began by identifying their strengths and practiced using them to problem solve 🧩.
Examples:

  • Using creativity to find a new way to complete a project

  • Using kindness to resolve a conflict with a friend

  • Using persistence to keep trying when a task is tough

Tip: Remind them that when things get challenging, they can always lean on their strengths!
