Happy Spring

Coming off the cold week last week, this weather feels like SPRING! Enjoy the weather, but don't get too excited! We don't want our students to be itching for summer quite yet.

There are some important pieces to this update:

1. Changes to Professional Salary Advancement

2. Renewal Agreemeents

3. Pulse Survey for 24-26

4. Employee of the Month

And more information!

Leave Page for 2024-25

If you have not already, please bookmark the leave page. It should answer most any question you have. The most common questions we receive are about 5% (Red) days and requesting and exception.

Remember that the 5% calendar (linked on the leave page) is not a live update. This means that a day and move from orange to red at any time. If you enter a day and it locks you out, talk with your principal to see if it is possible to secure coverage. In addition, if you are a teacher who went in and marked every Friday "just in case" please be mindful that there people who need those days off. You can certainly mark off a day anticipating a situation, but please don't pick the most popular days and until until 24 hours before to determine if you feel like being gone or not. This helps all of our staff get the most out of the PTO model.

Changes to Self-Paced Courses!!!!

During the negotiations process, the Board and KEA agreeded to some language changes that limit the coursework that can be counted for advancement on the salary schedule. Please see this langugage. Online programs are still appropriate, but please do some checking to ensure that they are part of an online graduate program and not the self-paced stand alone courses. In a nutshell...Idaho State and similar type coursework will not be accepted after September 1, 2025. THIS WILL NOT CHANGE ANYTHING FOR THIS YEAR. You can continue as usual as long as the coursework can be completed and on an official transcript by September 1, 2025. If you have additional questions, please let me know. If I get a lot of questions, I will put out an FAQ.

"Credits earned after the MA Degree must meet one of the following criteria: 1. Be related to an advanced degree such as an Education Specialist or Doctorate in related educational field. 2. Be in a second Master’s degree program 3. Be part of a program that may allow the teacher to teach dual credit coursework 4. Contribute to the staff member’s ability to add an additional endorsement or 5. Be in an area approved by the Superintendent or designee based upon the goals of the building or district. Additionally, online coursework and programs will be allowed, but self-paced online courses will only be allowed if they are within an approved program or otherwise in an area approved by the Superintendent or designee based upon the goals of the building or district."

Renewal Agreement Renewal Agreement

Coming next week!

Your principal will distribute a renewal agreement to each staff member. It will have your name and your CURRENT step and place. By signing this agreement you either

1. Agree to return to your position next year

2. Resign your position for next year.

A few things to note:

  • It will reflect your current Step and Place for the 24-25 school year. Any new coursework submitted this year and through Sept 1 will determine your placement for next year.
  • As a reminder, your steps do not always equal the number of years you have in the district if you were frozen at some point due to your educational place.
  • The date they are due is March 15th at 4:30. Yes, I know that this is a Saturday. However, this is the date established in Nebraska State Statute. Your principal will collect and submit them to me on Friday. If you need until the end of the day Saturday, you can email it to me.

Pulse Survey Pulse Survey

You will find the link to this year's Pulse Survey below.

As with last year, this data will be shared with your building pillar leaders to help evaluate and set goals around teacher recruitment and retention.

Brodie Besler - Facilities

Brodie is highly deserving of the Kearney Employee of the Month recognition. In a district our size, there are constant requests for building needs and concerns. When those jobs as assigned to Brodie, you can guarantee they will be completed in a timely and efficient manner.

Brodie is always willing to help and goes the extra mile to make sure that work orders are thoroughly completed. He is very responsive and willing to communicate to ensure that his work is done well. Brodie also demonstrates patience with questions and concerns with facility requests. Overall, Brodie embodies the qualities that we at KPS want to see in our staff across the board!

Sara Langan - Bright Futures

What makes her stand out even more is her heart. She's a wonderful team player, always willing to go above and beyond to support her colleagues. Over the past months, many of our colleagues have faced personal challenges and without fail. She steps in when needed, whether that means taking on extra work, offering a listening ear or helping someone. Her kindness, generosity, and unshakable support have made a world of difference

Her work ethic is unparalleled, but it's her compassion, empathy, and ability to lift others up that truly make her deserving of this recognition. Sara makes out team stronger, and we are so lucky to have her. She is the definition of a team player and an unsung hero.
