7 Guiding Principles for Families Supporting Remote Learning

In this first week of school, it's important to understand how best to support your children in their home learning. This is a good article from the spring that offers seven ideas that lead to success (based on research). While the article was written in April in response to the initial school closure, the ideas are as important this fall. Here are some of the key ideas from the article and how that might apply to your child here in TSD:

ESTABLISH A ‘FLEXIBLE LEARNING’ SPACE - The space your child is learning in should feel like school in some way.

CHECK IN EVERY MORNING—AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY - Your child should participate in each live learning time throughout the day. Teachers are recording their class meetings for students to watch later if needed.

ALLOW FREQUENT ‘BRAIN BREAKS’ - A 'brain break' involves students getting off screen time and moving their body. We recommend getting outside if possible.

FIND A RHYTHM THAT WORKS - Teachers are working to help create this rhythm for your child. If things are not working, please reach out directly to your child's teacher(s).

ENCOURAGE PRODUCTIVE STRUGGLE - This idea means that not everything will be easy and it's not up to you to make it that way for your child. Struggling and overcoming challenges builds resilience.

CONSIDER PASSIONS AND PLAY - When your child is done with their schoolwork, encourage learning in areas of interest.

Important Device Check-Out Information

Please note that the last day of centralized student device checkout for the listed schools below is today (Wednesday) from 11:00 am - 6:00 pm at the Conrad Ball Middle School north parking lot (2660 N Monroe Ave, Loveland).

After today (Sept 2), student devices will be checked out by appointment only. Please call the ITS Help Desk at 970-613-7777 for an available appointment slot. Then come to the front door of the TSD Support Service Building at 2890 N Monroe Ave, Loveland, to check out a device. You are required to fully wear a mask while checking out a device from within the front vestibule of the building.

Students enrolled at the schools below who checked out a device last spring should keep that device for the foreseeable future. District devices are meant for students who do not have their own devices at home. If a TSD student from one of the schools below does not have home technology available, they may check out a device regardless of family size. If they have not already done so recently, families must update their student’s registration at https://thompsonco.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/thompson.jsp prior to a student checking out a district device. Then they need to complete the checkout form at https://forms.gle/SaMHLKEf9KuRLRq88 before coming to the checkout station. If you need assistance with your TSD device, please call the ITS Help Desk for assistance at 970-613-7777. Unfortunately, this device offering is not available to TSD charter school students.

Please do not come to the checkout station if anyone in your family is exhibiting symptoms of illness. Parents/guardians of students younger than 16 must check out the device for their student at the checkout station.

Immunization Update for the 2020-2021 School Year

As we begin a new academic year, please don’t forget to provide your school with updated immunization information.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Colorado law (Board of Health rule 6 CCR 1009-2) still requires all students attending Colorado schools and licensed child cares to be vaccinated against certain diseases, unless an exemption is filed. Personal and religious exemptions are needed on a yearly basis. Please see the attached state immunization letter that schools are required to provide to families.

Parents are encouraged to e-mail immunization information to the health office staff at their student’s school(s) and to monitor their e-mail account for requests for information. Immunizations can be obtained from your child’s health care provider or by appointment from the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment’s Fort Collins location at no or little cost (970-498-6767). The Loveland Community Health Center also offers low-cost immunizations to qualifying families (970-669-4855). For more information about vaccine requirements, resources and exemptions, please visit the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's School Immunization page.

2020-2021 Student Fee Information

With the unique and challenging start to the school year, there have been many questions from families regarding how student fees will be managed. Please see below for important related information:

  • The district will collect the instructional materials fee from ALL students. This fee ranges from $25 - $32 per student depending on the grade level. These fees support the purchase of consumable materials and supplies, which are being provided to students in both learning environments.

  • The district will wait until the spring semester to collect course fees. More information on the process will be released as we get closer to that time frame.

To view the 2020-2021 TSD Course Fees document, please click HERE. As always, we thank you for your support.
