ACES Weekly Buzz
News and Views - 7 May 2025 - Week 1 - Issue 8
Tēnā koutou katoa parent(s), caregivers, whānau and external providers,
Welcome to the first week of Term 2 - Full timetable. It's fitting that our Term 2 theme is Hapori or Community, as we would like to first warmly welcome our new students and their whanau/caregivers, who joined us during Whakawhanaungatanga Week, last week.
The Weekly Buzz is designed to keep parents up to date with important Panui, dates and Campus activity, along with highlighting success stories of Rangatahi. To help students settle in we have attached a list of important details to note and refer to throughout Term 2 and the beginning of Term 3. Please feel free to print them off and attach them to your fridge.
In this week's issue, we also highlight a success story of Tori (from Maungarei) moving on in Term 2, through the lens of her Whanau. Showing how ACES equip our Tuakana students with tools to allow them to take that next step.
Each week we will highlight a Project Based Learning programme being run at each of our Campuses, starting this week with Social Enterprise at ACES Maungarei. We will highlight how the learning relates to real world problems or opportunities in our Community.
ACES 25 Year Celebrations flashback - ACES Student travels to Missouri
Earlier in the year I had the privilege of catching up with a former student Honore, albeit at the sad occassion of our colleague Buchanan's Funeral. Honore Cullerton was a former ACES Maungawhau student, whom went onto NZMA Culinary school and won a scholarship to work in Missouri in one of America's largest Hotel Franchises. He is now recently returned and in the process of living back in New Zealand, working and reconnecting with family and training. Here is an excerpt and flashback of his journey from our 2021 Newsletter compiled by the fabulous Natasha Guiry.

After a successful Amazing Race, combined campus and ACES Professionals event in Term 1, we are pleased to announce in combination with our ACES Professionals, the first ever ACES FIFA Futsal Tournament to be held at Action Central on Dominion Road, 10:30am Monday 9th June. Viva la ACES!
Moving on from ACES - Tori's Journey
There is nothing more pleasing then seeing akonga being equipped to take the next step in their life learning journey. Salome received this amazing message from a grateful whanau member.
Kia Ora Whanau,
My granddaughter Letoria aka Tori has attended ACES school for 1year and 1 term, being a young girl who struggled so much at mainstream school she ended up being excluded. Tori's journey at ACES School has been nothing but positive. I can't thank the team at Maungarei campus for everything they've implemented into Tori's achievements from personal care, social behaviour with other students to first aid certificate, work experience, a learner license...such amazing achievements, Maungarei Campus staff thank you for all your love and support.
Panui and Timetable checklist
Wednesdays
Please note that on Wednesdays, our TEINA students in Years 9 and 10 will be at school but finish early at 12.30pm. However, our TUAKANA students in Year 11 will be working from home on Wednesdays doing self-directed learning.
Absence and Lateness
A gentle reminder that if your child is either absent from school or running late, you will need to inform either our Tutors or office staff before 9am.
Many of our classes will be departing from our Campus at 10am for their off-site learning activities so it is very important that all students arrive at school by 09.30am.
$20 Activity Fee
Also just a friendly reminder that there is a $20 fee that is to be paid at the start of each term. This fee funds our learning activities for the term.
In closing, I have attached a copy of the contact details for our ACES AE Staff.
If you have any questions, please contact your Roopu Tutor, Campus leader or our office.

Project Based Learning: Social Enterprise at ACES Maungarei
Connecting to our Community through Social Enterprise
This Term ACES Maungarei students will begin exploring the world of social enterprise—an approach that combines the purpose of a charity within the structure of a business. They begin by learning the key differences between charities, businesses, and social enterprises, and how each plays a role in society.
A launch visit to MERGE Café in week 3, a local social enterprise, will give students a real-world example of how business can be used to meet community needs.
Working in groups, students will identify challenges in the Panmure and Glen Innes (Tamaki) community and start creating our own unique small social enterprise ideas to address those challenges. This will involve developing a mission and vision statement, designing a product or a service and taking on leadership roles within the Project teams.
Guest speaker LJ, from our prime model and collaborator All Heart NZ and a visit to the Tamaki Zero Waste Hub, will help inspire and inform our Rangatahi practical ways to engage in promoting sustainablity principles.
The main milestone at the end of Term, will be to present their Group business plans to the Panmure Business Association and guest entrepreneurs over morning tea; putting their learning into action to help create positive change in their community.
A prominent Māori Whakatauki about community is "Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi katoa", which translates to "With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive." This proverb emphasizes collaboration, recognizing that everyone contributes something valuable.
