The Second Grade Family News
October 15th, 2026
Dear Families,
I enjoyed meeting everyone at Open House and I am looking forward to seeing everyone at parent conferences. I hope things are going well with the homework. Please let me know if you have any questions.
We have been trying to enjoy these beautiful fall days and get outside as often as possible.
Many parents have asked what they can do for the classroom. If you are able the things on our wish are; disinfectant wipes , tissues, plastic spoons for snack, paper napkins. We also go through a lot of pencils. Anything is gratefully appreciated.
October's Calendar
All School Meeting
Academic Updates
Reading- The class has been split into reading groups and we are meeting in groups to work on phonics and comprehension while we read together.
Our whole class work has been talking about fiction stories. We enjoyed the story Sheila Rae the Brave by Kevin Henkes and the students did a small skit based on the story. We have been making connections to the story and continue to pay attention to the characters feelings.Up next is Girl Wonder by Deborah Hopkinson.
Writing- The students have been very busy writing this month. We worked on some silly stories. We also worked on some strategies for spelling while we write.
Math- We have begun working on Unit 2 and the Parent letter is below. Students are working on counting by tens and ones. We use base ten pieces to help us visualize place value. Check out the pictures above. We are noticing all kids of patterns on our October Calendar and we are continuing to work on time by 'collecting' five minutes a day for our monthly collection.
Science- We have enjoyed learning about habitats. The students had to problem solve in one science mystery. We learned why a wild animal might visit a playground. We also used frogs sounds to learn about different types of habitats.
Social Studies- Our first history mystery was to figure out what object in this picture is. We learned how historians follow clues from the past and solve these mysteries. Our first Social Studies unit will have the students thinking about maps.
