CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston

Dear Coyote Families,

We’ve had another wonderful week of learning and leadership at Canyon View Elementary! Our week began with a productive day of professional growth for our teachers, and when students returned on Tuesday, we dove straight into The Great Kindness Challenge. It has been heartening to see our Coyotes participate in intentional acts of kindness while celebrating our community through a fun-filled week of Spirit Days. A major highlight was the third-grade choral performance of Charlotte’s Web. Our talented students were a joy to watch, and we are so proud of their hard work. Please remember that Choral Music is a special program made possible through your voluntary donations to the CVES Foundation; we truly appreciate your support in keeping these opportunities available. We capped off the week with our spectacular STEAM Festival, where interactive booths offered students a hands-on look at a wide variety of scientific fields. A huge thank you to the amazing team of volunteers who dedicated their time to make this event such a success!

We have some fantastic things to look forward to in the week ahead, starting with our Scholastic Book Fair. Please check with your child’s teacher to find out when their class is scheduled to visit. On Tuesday, 2/3, the Book Fair will host special evening hours until 7:00 PM, featuring a performance by our Coyote Choir at 6:00 PM. This Thursday, students will participate in their 8th VAPA Day of the year, with lessons focusing on Theatre Arts (please see the flyer below for more information). This week also marks National School Counseling Week, a perfect time to celebrate the many ways our counselor, Mrs. Jill Cedillo, supports our campus. You can scroll down to view an infographic highlighting her vital work at Canyon View. Because of your generous Foundation donations, we are able to have a counselor on campus five days a week instead of four, providing our students with a consistent and incredible layer of support.

Let’s make it a GREAT week!

Warmly,

Erica Edmonston

Principal, Canyon View Elementary School

Please forward this information to families new to the area or our school district. This enrollment period includes new students who will be enrolling in Preschool through High School.

We can’t wait to meet our new families! New Student Enrolment for Poway Unified School District is an online process. Packets are completed digitally using any computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection. Please contact your assigned school of residence to schedule an appointment if you do not have access to a device/internet or need assistance with completing the online enrollment packet.

The 2026-2027 school year is scheduled to begin for all students on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. Welcome to PUSD! For more information about our schools and programs, visit our website.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten Information

If a school reaches near capacity for TK or Kindergarten, a lottery may be needed to determine student placement. To be included in the lottery (if required), families must submit their new student enrollment packets between February 2, 2026, and February 13, 2026, by 11:59 p.m. Only students who enroll during this period will be eligible. If a lottery is necessary at our school, families will be notified. The district conducts the lottery for each site.

2026-2027 Transfer Information

The Poway Unified transfer window opens on Sunday, February 1, 2026 at 8 a.m. If you live within the Poway Unified boundaries and want your child to attend a school different than your assigned school, submit your Intradistrict Transfer (IDT) request online through the Transfers page on the PUSD website. (This includes siblings of current students.) Please make sure to still enroll your child at their assigned school of residence when new student enrollment opens on Monday, February 2, 2026. Transfer requests can only be processed once your child is enrolled in their school of residence. The Intradistrict Transfer request window will close on Saturday, February 28, 2026.

Take-Home Meals for Students Fasting for Ramadan

The USDA approved California’s request to allow students fasting during Ramadan to take school meals home. Between February 23 and March 19, 2026, PUSD students who are fasting for Ramadan may pick up bagged, shelf-stable meals from their school cafeteria during the meal period, and bring them home for later. Parents/guardians must pre-register students for this option. Meals will be limited to foods and beverages that do not require refrigeration, so variety will be limited. Pre-registered students can choose to either eat the regular meals offered at school, or take home bagged meals for later, but not both.

If your child(ren) will be fasting during Ramadan and you would like to register them for take-home meals, please complete the online form by Friday, February 6, 2026: Ramadan Meals Registration Form

Blizzard, written & illustrated by John Rocco

Other parts of the country can experience very challenging conditions during winter time. While we watch the current weather drama from afar in San Diego, it can be exciting to read about snow adventures, especially from a kid’s perspective. (Some CVES classes enjoyed a read aloud of this book recently in the Library, but it’s worth sharing with your family!)

Interested in Visiting or Volunteering at Canyon View?

We love our volunteers! To get started, complete the Level 1 Volunteer Application for Canyon View Elementary at bit.ly/CVESVolunteer or click here (includes TB clearance and Megan’s Law check).

Some roles—like coaching, robotics, or working with students unsupervised—require Level 2 clearance. To obtain or renew Level 2 status, complete the Level 1 steps first, then request a Level 2 form from our office and complete fingerprinting at the PUSD District Office.

If you are visiting campus for a short time—such as attending an assembly, performance, class party or meeting—you do not need to register as a volunteer; simply check in at the front office as a visitor. Classroom visitors need to be scheduled in advance with both the office and the classroom teacher.
