The Graduate School Newsletter
Spring 2026
To all of our new and returning graduate students, I extend a warm Hood Hello as we begin the 2026 spring semester this week. Whether you are joining us on campus or online, we are delighted to welcome you to a dynamic and growing graduate community—one that continues to thrive despite the pace and pressures of our world beyond campus.
In this issue, you will find highlights of the many support structures, responsive resources, and enriching opportunities available to you as a Hood graduate student. These include wellness workshops designed to support your academic and personal well-being, a Graduate Student Discord server to help you connect virtually with peers across programs and modalities, our annual Graduate Career Series featuring accomplished alumni and industry leaders, and the ever-popular Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, open to graduate students engaged in independent research or other creative and scholarly work.
This year, we are especially excited to welcome more than 70 new graduate students representing a truly global cohort. Our newest students hail from Hungary, Pakistan, India, Colombia, and Ethiopia, alongside students from across the United States. We are equally proud of the diversity of our learning modalities, with students engaging from Frederick and the surrounding region, as well as from across the country and around the world through our online programs. Together, you bring a remarkable range of perspectives, professional experiences, and cultural backgrounds that enrich our classrooms and scholarly conversations.
Welcoming each new cohort is a powerful reminder of the Graduate School's mission: to serve and support all graduate students—regardless of geography, modality (online or on-campus), background, or life stage. Please do not hesitate to let our team know how we can improve your time here at Hood. We have team members dedicated to every facet of your success from orientation to degree progress and career development, so use your Hood resources early and often.
Best wishes for a successful and fulfilling academic year. You belong here, and we are honored to support you.

Welcome to another great and promising semester at Hood College! My name is Sam Pierre, and it is my continued honor to serve as your Graduate Student Association (GSA) President. As we begin the Spring 2026 semester, I am proud of the incredible momentum we built together last fall. Seeing so many of you at our many events reminded me that while our research and coursework may be specialized, our strength lies in our shared community. We aren't just graduate students in separate programs; we are a network of professionals and leaders supporting one another.
This semester is traditionally a season of growth and final milestones. Whether you are just beginning your graduate journey or are preparing to walk across the stage in May, the GSA is here to ensure you have the resources and social connection you need to cross the finish line. We have a robust calendar planned for the coming months, so keep an eye out for our emails and flyers, and remember, your voice is the most important tool we have. Whether you're interested in leadership roles or simply want to participate in our activities, we encourage you to contact us at GSA@hood.edu for all your questions and feedback, and follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and X. Have a great spring semester!
GSA President Sam Pierre
GSA Fall Hike
Welcome to the spring semester everyone! Whether you are a new or returning student, I hope you all had a lovely winter break. My name is Harriet Caesley, I am a student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, and I am excited to be Hood College’s new Graduate Student Success Coordinator. In this role, I strive to support you as graduate students by ensuring you are connected to the resources necessary for SUCCESS.
Throughout this semester you’ll notice me tabling with snacks and wellness resources in Hodson and the Toll House building. Please keep an eye on your email for details of when and where I’ll be through this semester!
If you’re struggling with academic or interpersonal pressures and need help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at GradSuccess@hood.edu so I can help connect you with the College’s support resources. I look forward to meeting many of you on-campus or online and good luck for the spring semester!
A new semester often means lots of new people and experiences. “New” is exciting, but it also can provoke a lot of anxious feelings. It is very common to feel anxious with new things, even if the new thing is something that you’ve always wanted or are very excited for. Here are some quick tips for managing anxiety:
- Don’t fight it. Fighting anxiety is a surefire way to intensify it. Instead, allow yourself to be anxious and remind yourself that you can do great things even while you’re anxious.
- Prepare. Put in the work ahead of time so that you’re the most ready you can be. Of course, this includes studying, but you can also practice being anxious! What happens to you when you get anxious? Many people say that they have a hard time quieting their mind. Every so often, what if you studied with an audiobook or music in your ear to practice having a busy mind? If things feel like they speed up for you, maybe you take some of the material from class and try to recite it in a “speed-round.”
- Breathe and relax. Many of us carry anxiety in our bodies. Taking time to focus on deep breathing and muscle relaxation may not remove the anxiety, but it can make it more bearable!
Anxiety is often cumulative, and as we add more and more stress to our lives, our ambient levels of anxiety ramp up, kind of like shaking a soda bottle. Just like slowly loosening the cap to let some of that fizz out, it’s important to take time for yourself to release a little bit of the anxiety you’re carrying around. A five-minute mindfulness break, time spent with a friend or loved one, a walk around the quad to admire the historic trees or even time spent alone doing nothing at all can be that little release you need to keep you going. And what if your soda bottle is ready to explode and you need help releasing the pressure? Reach out to a counselor at Hood Counseling Services, the NeighborHood Counseling Training Center, Thriving Campus and more!
Blazer Navigate - An App for Success
I am thrilled to introduce Hood College's student-success platform, Blazer Navigate. This robust platform will allow you to experience a truly holistic network of support, in addition to easy access to relevant programming and events, appointment scheduling with faculty and staff, tailored resources to grad-student success and so much more. You will have the ability with a simple click to "raise a hand" for help. Do you need internship support? Do you need to explore tutoring, accessibility and/or counseling services? The one-stop app will allow you to select the support you need. While you can access the platform anytime from your computer, we are encouraging all students to download the app on their phone. This is so important that we are putting the first 50 grad students to download the app this January into a drawing for multiple gift cards on January 30, so do not delay. Download the app from Google Play or the iPhone app store today!

· Clinical Mental Health or School Counseling
· Management Information Systems (MIS)
This past fall, we hosted our third annual 4PLUS induction ceremony honoring our new 4PLUS inductees. We are #HoodProud of the accomplishments of our undergraduate students in the 4PLUS program, as they balance an accelerated course load with the various demands of being a college student. Along with our induction ceremony, we also added two new 4PLUS tracks in Health Informatics and Management Information Systems! Both tracks are open to any first-year or transfer student at the college regardless of major.
Current undergraduate students and recent alumni also receive special benefits for applying to the Graduate School through our ALTY (Alumni of the Last Three Years) scholarship program. Benefits include waiving the application fee, no cost to your last three graduate credits and an expedited admission process. The Graduate School is hosting our 9th Annual Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) event on Thursday, April 16 at 5:30 p.m., which is open to all current grad students and to recent grad alumni who have graduated since September 2025. This internationally recognized event features student talks in a wide array of disciplines, from the sciences and business to the humanities and education fields (and everything in between). We consistently hear from our external advisory boards that employers value the ability to relay technical information to non-technical audiences (e.g., the media, policymakers, colleagues in other depts).
Learn more about this event on the national site or on Hood’s 3MT site. Here is a brief snapshot of the event as well. If you have completed a capstone, advanced project, thesis, portfolio, ceramics show, internship, etc., this is a great opportunity for you. You not only gain practice in a valuable skill, but there are three cash prizes for the winner and people’s choice awards. We have external judges from research and education to business leaders, who will decide the winning talk. The People’s Choice Awards will be determined by audience vote. It’s a great event to attend and cast your vote, even if you do not want to compete!
Ready to win? Simply click here to submit your abstract for consideration (DUE MARCH 30).
