Language Arts with Ms. Byrns & Mr. Gawthrop
This week students did outstanding work on their second Research Simulation Task. Students pulled relevant evidence from three different sources to create a 5 paragraph essay in response to the following question: How did the U.S. camps make refugees feel safe? This assignment will have 2 summative grades (IB Criteria A for analysis of information, and IB Criteria B for organization of ideas). These will both be entered as 4th quarter grades. Students can show your their finished essays on Pear. I expect to have them all graded by next Friday, if not sooner.
Next week we will do a bit of narrative writing (it's been a while!) and read all of Part 3 of Inside Out & Back Again. In this section, Hà's family immigrates to Alabama from their refugee camp on the island of Guam. Hà begins school and struggles to adapt to her new world.
Thank you so much for the recent donations of tissues, paper towels, pencils and wipes. Our current needs are bandaids, loose-leaf college ruled lined paper, and a new pencil sharpener. If you can help out, I've added a pretty sturdy sharpener to our wish list here. Thanks so much.

Geography with Ms. Trenkle
What a full week in Geography! This week we dove into the economics part of our unit. Students participated in three different simulations—about market, command, and traditional economies! Be sure to ask them what they experienced and what characteristics are of each economy! :) On Wednesday Ms. Eva joined us and facilitated a lesson about Germany. We made bookmarks and received a book about Germany from Ms. Eva. Students will be using their booklet in May when we work on our Germany research project! Students ended our week with vocabulary, Flocabulary, and annotated a reading about market and command economies.
Students will have more activities next week to help them understand these econ concepts. Their Unit 6 summative will be next Friday, March 28.
Students continue to have CEAs due each Friday. I continue to be super proud of those coming to CEA recess club on Wednesdays—they’re really doing a great job! :)
Last year I was asked by a parent for a list of books that her daughter might read if interested in other parts of the world. This summer I started, and over break I finished, a list of books. Students are welcome to use the list, but it isn’t required. Students who would like to can participate in our Geography Passport Reader Assignment and collect stamps for reach of the continents they read a book about. I’ve attached the list here, as well as the passport (which I will give a print out of if a student is interested). Happy reading! :) Geography and Young Adult Books.pdf
