Mrs. Meehan's Message
Dear Bywood Families,
At Bywood Elementary, we are committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and respectful learning environment where every child feels valued and included. One of our most important responsibilities is ensuring that all students feel safe when they come to school each day.
This week, I would like to take a moment to remind our families about the Upper Darby School District’s bullying policy and the importance of working together to prevent bullying in our school community.
Bullying is not tolerated at Bywood. We want our students to understand that their words and actions matter. Whether in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, playground, or online, we expect our Royals to treat one another with kindness and respect.
Under UDSD Policy 249, bullying includes intentional physical, verbal, written, or electronic behavior that is severe, persistent, or pervasive and interferes with a student's education, creates a threatening environment, or substantially disrupts school operations. This includes cyberbullying. Please take a moment to review the attached letter for more bullying information.
It is important for families to understand that while not every disagreement or unkind interaction meets the formal definition of bullying, all concerning behavior deserves attention. We take reports seriously and will address inappropriate behavior, whether or not it meets the definition of bullying.
If your child shares that they are being bullied, witnessing bullying, or feeling unsafe, please encourage them to tell a trusted adult at school. Families are also encouraged to contact their child's teacher or the main office so that we can address concerns promptly. Our district has a formal reporting and investigation process, and we will follow those procedures when bullying is reported.
I also ask that you take a few minutes at home to talk with your child about the importance of keeping their hands and feet to themselves, using kind words, including others, and speaking up when they see someone being mistreated.
Our goal is not simply to respond when something goes wrong, but to teach our children how to be respectful, responsible, and caring members of our school community.
Thank you for your continued partnership in helping us make Bywood a place where every Royal feels safe, supported, and ready to learn!
Keep smiling,
Mrs. Kristin Meehan

Attendance Awareness Month
September is Attendance Awareness Month!
Every school day matters. Regular attendance helps students stay connected to their teachers, classmates, and learning, while also building the habits they need for success in school and beyond. Establishing consistent morning and evening routines, planning ahead for appointments, and communicating with your child’s school when challenges arise can make a meaningful difference in student attendance.
Together, we can help every student be present, engaged, and ready to learn—because every day counts!

Parking Reminder
Please remember that if you park your vehicle on Bywood Elementary School property overnight, your car must be removed from the property by 7:15 a.m.
Vehicles remaining on school property after 7:15 a.m. are subject to being towed. We absolutely do not want that to happen, but we need to make sure our parking spaces are available for our teachers and staff as they arrive for the school day.
Thank you so much for your cooperation and understanding!
Address Reminder
if you have moved, changed addresses, or changed any of your contact information, please let us know right away. It is extremely important that Bywood always has the most accurate and up-to-date information for every student.
Having correct addresses, phone numbers, and emergency contacts is essential for the safety of your children and ensures that we can reach you quickly if needed. Please do not wait to notify us of any changes throughout the school year. Your child’s safety is always our top priority! 💜
Join the Band
4th and 5th graders at Bywood have the exciting opportunity to learn to play a band instrument this year! Last week, we held an assembly where students had the chance to hear and learn about the instruments they can choose from. If your student is interested in participating in band this year, please review the attached document and complete the form linked within it. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to our new band teacher, Ms. Yacavino at hyacavino@upperdarbysd.org. We hope to welcome many new band students to the program this year!
Safety Reminder
Parents, please help us keep all of our students safe at dismissal. We strongly encourage all students to cross the street with a crossing guard. In particular, if your 4th or 5th grader dismisses from the bus loop, please remind them to cross at Avon and Madeira with the crossing guard.
We have recently seen students crossing in the middle of the street, which is extremely unsafe. Please talk with your child about using the designated crossing area each day. A few extra steps are always worth it when it comes to keeping our kids safe!
Thank you for your help and partnership!
