Medication Pick-up & 7th Grade Vaccinations

Parents & Guardians,

MEDICATION COLLECTION: If you have medications in the clinic, they will need to be picked up before the end of the year otherwise, they will be destroyed per district policy. Please make time to come by and grab them!

7th GRADE VACCINATIONS: All 6th-grade parents, vaccines are required for entry into 7th grade! If you have not yet checked on this, now is the time! I will begin placing holds for 7th-grade schedules next week. You will not be able to get your child's schedule without attention to this matter! If you are planning for a visit to the pediatrician over the Summer you can send the shot record to me via email at any time over the break and I will release the hold.

Please keep in mind that leaving this till the last minute during the Summer can become problematic, in that there will be difficulties getting an appointment with all of the other children needing shots in the area. Get it done early!!

Letters were sent home with delinquent students! If your child is delinquent, they will have an envelope, from me, in their backpack. Please also keep in mind that your child may already have these shots! They are due at their 11-year-old checkup. You may only need to reach out to your pediatrician to get the updated record.

Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Rodeo Tip of the Week

Teens experience pressure in every aspect of their lives, and they need ongoing encouragement during these difficult years, especially from their parents.

Here are six easy ways parents can keep supporting teens:

1. No time, then text! On a random day, send your teen a text filled with a positive message. It can be about anything. If your teen’s having a hard week, send a note of encouragement by telling her she makes you proud. If your teen has a test that day, send a good luck text telling her she’s got this! Even a simple “I love you” can (secretly) make her day. Let your teen know you’re thinking about her at times she thinks you aren’t. When kids know they are loved and supported, it can go a long way.

2. How can I help? Before your teen goes to bed, ask him this: “What can I do for you tomorrow to make your life easier?” Asking this question will let him know you’re aware of all he’s doing, and how you want to help in any way you can. Offering this open-ended question gives ample room for your teen to ask for help with something he might not previously have mentioned, or maybe address an issue he wanted to handle himself. If he is stumped and says he can’t think of anything, surprise him with something you know he will appreciate, such as baking his favorite brownies, doing a load of laundry, buying lunch and dropping it at school, picking up poster board for that report, etc.

3. Leave a hand-written note in their room. It doesn’t have to be a literary masterpiece filled with an exorbitant amount of praise. No teen wants that kind of sap from their parents. Just a simple note will do. Scribble a smiley face or heart and write “Love you no matter what.” Or maybe write a funny joke or a quote that reminded you of her or a song lyric from one of her favorite artists. Anything written will tell her she is important and loved in her home.

4. Let your teen overhear you brag about them to others. When you’re on the phone talking with someone, or you run into someone you know, and your teen is within earshot, make sure to share some positive things he is doing if the conversation allows for that. It’s important to make sure your teen doesn’t overhear you complaining and never openly discuss your teen’s challenges with others in front of him. Remain positive and highlight the good things, instead. The more our kids hear us talking positively about them, the more they will believe it for themselves—and feel more secure and confident in who they are. In the end, every teenager needs that.

5. Show up—as much as you possibly can. Try your best to make it to that game, attend that event, go to that concert. We are all busy, but when we show up for our kids, we convey they are important to us and what they are doing is a priority in our lives. Parents can’t make every single activity our kids participate in, but we can surely try. More importantly, keep your full attention on your kid when you are at their event. Put away your phone, stop talking to that friend, and watch your kid play, perform, speak, etc. Your teen deserves that.

6. Buy your teen a small gift for no reason at all. When least expected, buy your teen something small that shows you are thinking about them. When you’re out doing errands or traveling for work and see that item that reminds you of your teen or spot something you know she would love, get it. Wrap it up and give it to her, just because you knew she would like it. It’s not what it costs, but the fact that you thought about them that makes them feel special.

It doesn’t take too much time, money, or effort to do these six simple things, so let’s make sure our kids know we believe in them, love them, and their happiness matters.

Cowboy Character

Every morning this school year, we have paused for a minute to listen to words of wisdom from around the world. We have heard words of poets, philosophers, politicians, and more.

So what now? Do we expect you to be the wisest young person in Plano? Are we looking to see if you have sprouted wings?

American writer Elbert Hubbard said:

Every person is a fool for at least five minutes every day. Wisdom consists in not exceeding the limit.

We all do foolish things every day. We say something we wish we hadn’t said. We do something we wish we hadn’t. We’re too hard on ourselves about one thing and not hard enough on ourselves about something else. The goal this summer is to do your very best to make the wisest choices you can and try not to exceed the limit when it comes to foolish behavior.
