Dear Mayfair Community,

Abilities Awareness Assembly

Tomorrow: We will hold our 15th Annual Abilities Awareness Assembly and Experience for all of our students at Mayfair. This assembly highlights the school's committment to an inclusive environment for all. We will have student and guest speakers share their experences with our entire campus. Having been a part of this event the last three years has been one of the highlights of my time here at Mayfair. Unified SOONS!

Information on Search and Seizure

The Board of Education is fully committed to promoting a safe learning environment and, to the extent possible, eliminating the possession and use of weapons, illegal drugs, and other controlled substances by students on school premises and at school activities. As necessary to protect the health and welfare of students and staff, school officials may search students, their property, and/or district property under their control and may seize illegal, unsafe, or otherwise prohibited items.

The Board urges that employees exercise discretion and good judgment. When conducting a search or seizure, employees shall act in accordance with law, Board policy, and administrative regulation.

Individual Searches
School officials may search any individual student, his/her property, or district property under his/her control when there is a reasonable suspicion that the search will uncover evidence that he/she is violating the law, Board policy, administrative regulation, or other rules of the district or the school. Reasonable suspicion shall be based on specific and objective facts that the search will produce evidence related to the alleged violation. The types of student property that may be searched by school officials include, but are not limited to, lockers, desks, purses, backpacks, student vehicles parked on district property, cellular phones, or other electronic communication devices.

Any search of a student, his/her property, or district property under his/her control shall be limited in scope and designed to produce evidence related to the alleged violation. Factors to be considered by school officials when determining the scope of the search shall include the danger to the health or safety of students or staff, such as the possession of weapons, drugs, or other dangerous instruments, and whether the item(s) to be searched by school officials are reasonably related to the contraband to be found. In addition, school officials shall consider the intrusiveness of the search in light of the student's age, gender, and the nature of the alleged violation.

Employees shall not conduct strip searches or body cavity searches of any student. (Education Code 49050)

Searches of individual students shall be conducted in the presence of at least two district employees.

The principal or designee shall notify the parent/guardian of a student subjected to an individualized search as soon as possible after the search.

Searches of Multiple Student Lockers/Desks
All student lockers and desks are the property of the district. The principal or designee may conduct a general inspection of school properties that are within the control of students, such as lockers and desks, on a regular, announced basis, with students standing by their assigned lockers or desks. Any items contained in a locker or desk shall be considered to be the property of the student to whom the locker or desk was assigned.

This policy underscores the district's commitment to balancing school safety with students' rights and privacy. It provides clear guidelines for school officials on when and how to conduct searches, ensuring that such actions are lawful, reasonable, and respectful of students' rights.

Remember, for the most current and detailed information, always refer to the official Bellflower Unified School District policy documents or consult with district administration.

Warm regards,

Mayfair Administration

The advanced ceramics students recently completed an exciting six-week project, where they worked in groups to create the tallest, strongest, and most interesting sculptures. Throughout the process, they faced numerous challenges that required problem-solving and teamwork to overcome. In the end, the Garfield sculpture stood out, earning recognition for its exceptional teamwork, impeccable craftsmanship, and resilience. This project was a testament to the students' dedication and creativity, and their hard work was truly impressive. While photos capture some of the details, the sculptures are even more remarkable in person!

Meet The Administrators Meet The Administrators

Each newsletter, we will be showcasing one of our school administrators. This week, we would like to showcase Calvert Wright, who serves as one of our assistant principals.

zoom_out_map

I am honored to join Mayfair High School & Middle School as an Assistant Principal for the 2024-2025 school year. With over a decade of experience in education, leadership, and student advocacy, I am committed to fostering academic excellence, equity, and a collaborative school culture that empowers students, staff, and the broader community.

Before joining Mayfair, I served at Lynwood High School in multiple leadership roles, including Instructional Lead, Special Education Department Chair, WASC Focus Group Leader, and member of the School Leadership Team. In these positions, I worked closely with teachers and administrators to implement data-driven instructional strategies, strengthen professional learning communities (PLCs), and drive student achievement. My experience analyzing student performance data and collaborating with educators to improve instructional practices has reinforced my belief in the power of targeted interventions and continuous professional growth.

As Special Education Department Chair, I led a team of 60 staff members, ensuring students with disabilities received high-quality instruction while fostering inclusive learning environments. Additionally, I helped develop and implement mentorship programs for multilingual learners, supporting over 375 students in passing the ELPAC exam. These experiences deepened my passion for equity, diversity, and inclusion (DEI), guiding my commitment to ensuring that every student, regardless of background or ability, has access to a rigorous and supportive education.

I am pursuing a Doctorate in Education (EdD) at the University of Southern California (USC), specializing in Leading Instructional Change. This program has further strengthened my expertise in instructional leadership, equity-driven decision-making, and systemic school improvement, all of which I look forward to applying in my role at Mayfair.

Beyond the classroom and leadership roles, my background in basketball coaching has significantly shaped my approach to education. Coaching has reinforced my commitment to mentorship, teamwork, and resilience, and I bring that same mindset to my work with students and staff. Building strong relationships and fostering a culture of accountability, perseverance, and growth are essential to student success.

As I step into this role at Mayfair High School & Middle School, I will build strong relationships with students, staff, and families, strengthen instructional practices, and foster a positive, student-centered culture. I am excited to collaborate with the dedicated educators and staff at Mayfair and to be part of a school community that values excellence, equity, and continuous learning.

I look forward to working alongside the Mayfair Monsoon community to support and uplift our students and ensure that they are prepared to thrive academically, socially, and beyond.

Meet The Administrators Meet The Administrators

Each newsletter, we will be showcasing one of our school administrators. This week, we would like to showcase Kelly Young, who serves as one of our high school counselors.

zoom_out_map

Ms. Young is a dedicated member of the Mayfair Middle/High School community for the past 29 years. A proud graduate of Mayfair High School, Ms. Young's journey began as an instructional aide in the Special Education department, where she quickly demonstrated her commitment to student success. After transitioning to a high school math teacher, she spent 12 years inspiring students in the classroom. In addition to her teaching math, she coached the junior varsity and varsity softball team. For the past 14 years, she has served as a high school counselor, where her expertise and passion for supporting students have made a lasting impact on countless individuals.

Ms. Young earned her Bachelor's degree at CSUDH and holds both a single subject teaching credential in Math and a PPS School Counseling credential from Azusa Pacific University. She also completed two Master's Degrees from Azusa Pacific, one in Education and the other in School Counseling. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ms. Young is a proud single mom to her 9-year-old son, who is active in baseball and basketball. She is a true advocate for education and is excited to continue supporting our students as they grow both academically and personally.

Student and Parent Support Resources and Links Student and Parent Support Resources and Links

Bellflower Unified School District (BUSD) is dedicated to the success of all students and believes that every school should be a safe and welcoming place for all students and their families, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

The following are key documents and resources that ensure that we are supporting all of our Mayfair Middle & High School students on campus.

Plyler v. Doe?

In June 1982, the Supreme Court issued Plyler v. Doe, a landmark decision holding that states cannot constitutionally deny students a free public education on account of their immigration status.

AB 699?

In response, AB 699 provides critical protections for immigrant students including: prohibiting the collection of information regarding immigration status; requiring the adoption of model policies to prevent immigration enforcement on school grounds; and prohibiting discrimination based on immigration status.
