A Note from Adam

Dear New Buffalo Families,

I hope this message finds you enjoying a relaxing and fun-filled summer! While school may be out for students, the work behind the scenes continues in full swing. From major facility upgrades to exciting collaborations that could shape the future of employee benefits, this summer has been full of energy, planning, and progress.

As always, thank you for your continued support of New Buffalo Area Schools. We are excited about what lies ahead and look forward to welcoming everyone back soon for another great year.

Warmly,

Adam Bowen
Superintendent

Berrien County Insurance Consortium: Collaborative Approach to Employee Benefits Berrien County Insurance Consortium: Collaborative Approach to Employee Benefits

Over the past few months, New Buffalo Area Schools has been actively exploring the possibility of joining an insurance consortium with other school districts across Berrien County. This collaboration stems from a shared concern: the rapidly rising cost of employee insurance benefits. Over the past five years, our district has experienced a more than 40% increase in insurance costs—a burden that impacts both our employees and our operating budget. This level of increase is simply not sustainable in the years ahead.

In today’s challenging education job market, retaining and recruiting high-quality educators is more important than ever. A unified approach to benefits across Berrien County could help create consistency without districts competing for staff based solely on benefit packages. Rather than drawing talent away from neighboring schools, we hope to create a system that strengthens all districts collectively.

While we are still in the early stages, the work being done is very promising. Discussions have been ongoing, and many hours have been invested into reviewing options, consulting with legal and financial experts, and analyzing data from existing consortia across the state. Some of these groups have reported insurance cost increases as low as 3% annually over a five-year period—about 15% total—far below what we have experienced.

Of course, this work involves careful coordination with collective bargaining units, and those conversations are a vital part of the process. Still, it has been inspiring to witness educators, administrators, and stakeholders from across the county coming together to explore a solution that could benefit all employees and their families.

We expect to have more clarity in the coming months on whether this initiative is viable. Regardless of the outcome, this collaboration is a powerful example of what we can accomplish when we work together for the common good.

NBARA & Foundation Update: Major Field Improvements Started in July NBARA & Foundation Update: Major Field Improvements Started in July

We are excited to share that significant improvements to both the city’s softball field and the school’s baseball field are scheduled to begin in July. These upgrades are the result of months of planning, meetings, and collaboration among the New Buffalo Area Recreation Authority (NBARA), the City of New Buffalo, New Buffalo Township, and the school district.

NBARA was established many years ago with a vision to improve recreational facilities within the community—particularly at Oselka Park. This upcoming project marks one of the most ambitious undertakings in NBARA’s history, and we’re proud to see it finally taking shape.

Thanks to a DNR Passport Grant secured by NBARA, the city-owned Field Four will undergo major accessibility improvements. NBARA has secured a 50-year lease for this field, ensuring long-term stewardship and use. Additionally, we are thrilled to share that private donors—through the newly formed New Buffalo Community Education Foundation—have committed significant funding to support the installation of artificial turf on the infield. These generous contributions will help transform the softball and baseball fields into state-of-the-art facilities.

This project is more than just a renovation—it’s a symbol of what can be achieved through strong partnerships between schools, local government, and our community. We hope this initiative marks the beginning of many more collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents and creating top-tier amenities for our youth and families to enjoy for generations.

We are truly excited about what lies ahead and grateful for the support that is making this vision a reality.

Margaret Seifert - Kindergarten Teacher

Hello everyone!

My name is Margaret Seifert—soon to be Margaret Kause—and I am beyond excited to introduce myself as the new kindergarten teacher at New Buffalo Elementary School!

I was born and raised in Three Oaks, Michigan, and feel incredibly fortunate to have attended and graduated from New Buffalo Area Schools. After earning my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Ferris State University, with minors in Language Arts, Integrated Science, and Spanish, I began my teaching career in Grand Ledge, Michigan, where I taught 2nd grade for the past two years.

Recently, my fiancé and I made the decision to move back to the area to be closer to our families. It feels good to be back home, and I’m honored to now give back to the community that helped shape who I am today.

As your child’s kindergarten teacher, one of my biggest goals is to help them fall in love with learning—discovering something new and exciting every single day. I can't wait to meet all of you and embark on this wonderful journey together!

Bryan Ripley - CTE - Building Trades Instructor

I have been a local resident and licensed contractor for 30+ years. I am married to my wife, Tracy, for 30 years and have two beautiful children that have both graduated from New Buffalo. I have been a local coach and volunteer for many youth sports as my children were growing up. I enjoy spending time outdoors hunting and snowboarding, as well as time with friends and family.

I am looking forward to working with the students in Berrien County to continue to expand their skills within the trades and hope to provide them with the skill set they need for post-secondary employment within the field of construction.

Lakeisha Hayes - Paraprofessional

My husband, Corey Hayes, and I have two amazing children, Jad and Lillith Hayes. We moved to Michigan from Alabama last year. I was born in Alabama, but my father was in the military, so I spent most of my life moving to different places. I graduated from Jacksonville State University in 2014 with a degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in General Science.

I have been an educator for the past 10 years. I’ve taught 7th - 12th grade Science, Computer Science, and Cultural Studies. I am looking forward to working as a Paraprofessional at the elementary school. My goal this year is to learn as much as I can, so that I can grow as a person and as an educator.

As a special educator with 10 years of experience and a mother of two children with special needs, I am committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment that enables every student to thrive. We have an experienced team of educators whom I look forward to working with to continue the success of our special education programs. One of my objectives moving forward will be to further incorporate personal curriculum methods for special education students in the transition process.

Summer Projects Summer Projects

As summer moves along, we wanted to share a few exciting updates on the behind-the-scenes work happening across New Buffalo Area Schools.

Our Operations team has been hard at work preparing our buildings for the upcoming school year. Classrooms are undergoing a thorough deep cleaning to ensure a fresh, welcoming environment for students and staff this fall.

Here are just a few of the projects currently underway:

  • Upper elementary coat rooms, work rooms, and the Gross Motor room are being stripped and waxed for a refreshed look.

  • Middle school hallways are getting a fresh coat of paint.

  • Updates continue in the Spanish room, including the planned removal of windows as part of an upgrade.

  • The Gold Gym and Elementary Gym floors are also being stripped and waxed.

We’re grateful for the hard work of our custodial and maintenance teams, and we can’t wait for families to see the improvements when school resumes.

Strategic Plan - Annual Goals Strategic Plan - Annual Goals

Looking Ahead: Our 2025–2026 Goals

At New Buffalo Area Schools, we’re committed to continuous improvement in everything we do—from academics to facilities, and from staff support to student well-being. As we begin the 2025–2026 school year, we want to share the key goals we’re working toward as a district.

Academics: Supporting Student Growth

Helping students succeed in reading and math remains a top priority. This year, we’re focused on increasing the number of students who reach proficiency on the state assessments in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. Our team will use data to guide instruction and ensure that every student gets the support they need to grow.

Growth and Sustainability: Planning for the Future

We’re also focused on strengthening our internal systems and planning ahead to support long-term success. This includes:

  • Improving our employee experience, based on districtwide feedback

  • Encouraging departments to share more stories and achievements through our marketing team

  • Developing a clear PK–12 curriculum review cycle to guide instructional updates

  • Conducting a full evaluation of our district facilities to create a long-term improvement plan

Culture and Community: Building a Positive Environment

Creating a safe, inclusive, and connected school environment is essential. This year, we’re working to:

  • Launch a district-wide anti-bullying program for all grade levels

  • Foster more open and honest communication throughout our organization

  • Introduce age-appropriate cannabis education for elementary, middle, and high school students

  • Complete renovations to our softball and baseball fields

  • Ensure that each school and department partners with a local community organization

We’re excited about what’s ahead and grateful for your continued support. Together, we’re building a stronger future for every student at New Buffalo Area Schools.

Summer School Summer School

New Buffalo Area Schools just wrapped up an exciting five-week summer school program that brought 44 students, from kindergarten all the way through high school, back to campus for learning and fun.

This year’s program focused on keeping kids engaged through interactive games, hands-on activities, and the use of new technology. Students worked on academic skills while also building friendships and learning how to work together.

Our goal was to make summer learning something students look forward to. It’s all about helping them feel confident going into a new school year.

From technology challenges to team-building games, these summer school sessions have given students a chance to learn in creative ways and stay connected with their classmates over the summer.

Day Care Day Care

As we step into a brand-new school year, we can’t help but look back with full hearts at the incredible journey we’ve taken together. This past year, our first herd of Little Bisons made their way off to PreK—and as you read this, they’re preparing to take on Kindergarten! We’re so proud of the confident, curious learners they’ve become.

We saw our enrollment more than double! Our classrooms buzzed with energy, imagination, and wonder all year long. We were thrilled to expand into a third classroom to support our growing community, and the Prairie classroom got a fabulous new lofted play area—perfect for imaginative adventures!

Technology Update Technology Update

Over the past year, the Technology Department has been focused on enhancing district-wide security and infrastructure. One of our main initiatives has been the implementation of keycard access on all interior and exterior doors, marking the beginning of a phased approach to eliminate traditional physical keys.

We have also upgraded and expanded our security camera system at the middle/high school to increase coverage across the district, with additional camera installations planned at the elementary school to provide more coverage.

In parallel, we are developing a new emergency management system that will integrate our intercoms, door access controls, and communication tools to improve responsiveness and coordination in critical situations.

Additionally, over the coming months, we will be upgrading our network infrastructure to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity throughout the district.
