What Has Been Happening In Mr. Brown's Classroom? What Has Been Happening In Mr. Brown's Classroom?

Mr. Brown’s 7th Graders Learn Real-World Math Connections

Students in Mr. Brown’s 7th grade math class are discovering that math is not just numbers on paper, it’s a life skill used every day. This past week, Mr. Brown’s students explored how percents and proportions connect to real-world decisions like shopping, eating at a restaurant, staying healthy, and even playing sports.

By understanding that a percent represents a portion or piece of a whole and a proportion compares two equal ratios, students learned to solve everyday problems. They practiced finding shopping discounts by calculating the percentage saved on sales, determining fair tips at restaurants, reading nutrition labels to measure healthy choices, and analyzing sports statistics to understand player performance.

Mr. Brown emphasized that “Math comes alive when students see how it applies beyond the classroom.” Students worked through interactive examples, comparing prices, meals, and athletic stats to make smart, informed decisions.

Through hands-on learning and teamwork, these 7th graders are realizing that math is more than equations, it is a key to making sense of the world around them.

Ribbon Week takes place this week with the theme, “Life Is A Puzzle, Solve It Drug Free”. The campaign is the nation's longest-running drug prevention effort and encourages students to make positive, drug-free choices. We are celebrating this week at Scott with theme days throughout the week.

  • Kick-Off Monday (Oct. 27): Wear Red to show your commitment to being drug-free.
  • Team Up Tuesday (Oct. 28): Wear Coatesville colors — red and black — or Scott Middle School/Coatesville gear to show that we’re stronger together.
  • Wake Up Wednesday (Oct. 29): Wear pajamas to show we’re “waking up” to a healthy lifestyle. (Please, no slippers.)
  • Bright Futures Thursday (Oct. 30): Wear neon or bright colors to shine a light on your bright, drug-free future!
  • Scare Away Drugs Friday (Oct. 31): Wear Halloween or fall colors to show that we can “scare away” drugs. (Please, no costumes.)

October's Focus is Hallway Behavior October's Focus is Hallway Behavior

Our PBIS focus for the month of October is hallway behavior. Students should be walking to classes and arriving on time. Students that follow these expectations will be attending an extra recess during the first week of November. Students that do not, will be staying in and completing a lesson on safety and taking ownership for their actions.

Our staff has noticed that many students are using transition time to find friends and "play." Students are being referred to the office for running, playing tag, and squirting water from water bottles at each other. These behaviors are minor but can also be very dangerous if an accident happens. When conduct referrals come to the office, families are called, and depending on the seriousness of the infraction, consequences are given according to our code of conduct. Mr. Altland and I appreciate your support in speaking with your students about these expectations.

Over the next few weeks, we are adding another layer of urgency to help our students understand that the hallways need to be safe. Our administration will be conducting "Hall sweeps." After the transition time is over, staff will be instructed not to let any students in their classrooms and students in the halls will be collected and taken to our auditorium. Mr. Altland, Mr. Henry and I will support the students in calling home and explaining why they are not in class. They will stay in the auditorium and complete work which we have asked for from the staff. At the change of the next period they will continue with their day. If students are caught again in the same day, they will be calling back to schedule a detention. If they are caught multiple times throughout the week, the phone call will be to share that they have an In School Suspension.

We are hoping that this process will help our students understand the urgency of getting to class, staying in class to learn, and being safe. Once again, we appreciate your support!
