A Note From Principal Chantal Ligtenberg
We wish you all a wonderful holiday break! I hope you are all able to spend time with family and friends and enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle! If you hear the words, “I’m bored” from your students during the break, I am sure you will have plenty of ideas for them. In case you run out of ideas, they are more than welcome to login to Dreambox and Lexia or nestle in with their library book.
Breakfast:
Just a reminder that the breakfast doors open at 7:30. Please have your child here by 7:45 to prevent them from being late to class.
Smart Phones/ Smart Watches:
It is standard procedure that all cell phones remain in students’ backpacks during school hours. Smart watches may remain on if they have settings that don’t allow usage during the school hours. Otherwise, smart watches are also to be in the students’ backpack.
Valentines Day:
Before we know it, we will be celebrating another holiday! We receive a large number of special deliveries sent to the school for students. Due to the large number of deliveries, these special items are held until the end of the school day to minimize the disruption within the classroom. Please keep this in consideration as the amount of deliveries can be a challenge for our office personnel.
Winter wear:
There is not much we can do about weather, but there are key steps we can do to keep our students healthy.
- Dress children warmly for the cold weather. Please make sure you send them with a winter coat during these colder months.
- Stress the importance of eating a good breakfast every morning.
- Stress hand washing, particularly in the winter months.
- Talk to your doctor or school nurse about when a sick child should return to school.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held February 26 and 29 from 4-7 p.m. The PTA will also put on a Scholastic Book Fair in conjunction with conferences in our library. Your teachers will be in contact with you to schedule your students’ conference.
Lost & Found
Our lost and found is overflowing! If your student happens to be missing something,
please check out the fixture in the front entryway.

Spelling Bee
Sturgis Elementary hosted the annual 4th grade spelling bee on December 6.
This process began with all students in fourth grade taking a preliminary written test. Based on their scores, twenty-three finalists were selected for the final competition. These students were given two mock bees for practice along with suggestions for studying.
Many were in the audience for our final spelling bee, including all third and fourth-grade classes and family members of the competitors. Over 225 people were in attendance! Students were nervous and excited for the opportunity to show their spelling skills. The bee lasted six rounds before one final winner was determined.
Autumn Kinney was the final winner, spelling all of her words correctly! She now has the opportunity to represent Sturgis Elementary at the Regional Spelling Bee which will be held in Rapid City in February of 2024.
We are very proud of all of the students who competed and
wish Autumn the best of luck at the next level.

Volunteering
Educating youth takes a community effort, and because of that the Meade School Board is encouraging parents, guardians and other interested patrons to volunteer their time, knowledge and talents.
Members of the community bring new energies and resources into the schools and expand the walls of the classrooms. School volunteers enrich the educational program and strengthen the schools’ relationships with homes, businesses, public agencies and private institutions. All volunteers in the Meade School District do so without pay or employee benefits, except for workers’ compensation. For those interested in volunteering.
Mail to Meade School District, 1230 Douglas Street, Sturgis, S.D. 57785.
