Make Your Child’s Day: Learn a new skill with a how-to book

Odds are you’ve probably heard about the maker movement but what

exactly does that mean and why should you care? Check out this video

“What is a Maker?” to find out more.

What Is a Maker?

As it has been said by numerous people from Dale Doughtery, the founder

of Make:® , to President Obama, humans are hardwired to create and

share. Not only is it part of what makes us human it’s a whole lot of fun!

So what does making have to do with reading and writing? Everything!

Consulting books to create something new is one of the best ways to show

your child the importance of reading and how it connects to his or her life.

You are reinforcing important comprehension skills when reading for

information and you are exposing your child to background knowledge that

will boost their comprehension of all types of texts.

Sharing your knowledge (a major component of the maker movement) helps build the

skills for future writing. So why not try your hand at making? Getting started is as easy as 1-2-3.

  1. Start with a subject that interests your child. It could be low tech or high tech the most important thing is that your child is excited by the subject.
  2. Head to the public library and find some books that will help you figure out where your project is headed. While you’re there be sure to check out all the free activities coming up - who knows - one might even relate to your maker project!
  3. Discuss what your child hopes to learn and accomplish. This will help focus the reading. Remember, informational text need not be read cover to cover.

Then dive-in and give it a whirl. Use the knowledge you’ve gained from reading to make something new. This is also a great time to practice perseverance if the project doesn’t turn out they way you wanted the first time refocus and start again. Encourage your child to share his or her experiences with others.

Have fun making!
