English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston

In English this week, scholars strengthened their narrative writing skills by rewriting a chapter of The Giver from The Giver’s perspective, using a thirdperson point of view (a narrator outside the story describing characters’ thoughts and actions). Scholars should arrive on Monday, February 23rd with completed rough drafts; final drafts are due Tuesday, February 24th and must be typed in Class Notebook. Later this week, we’ll begin our poetry unit by reviewing poetic elements and reading William Stafford’s poem Burning the Book.

Math with Mx. Gomez

6th Grade Accelerated Math

Students did a great job with learning how temperature changes can be diagrammed on a number line and plotting points in the coordinate grid this week! Next week students will have their Criterion A Summative to follow up on the Formative they completed this week – on the Summative, students will be comparing and ordering integers and rational numbers. Students will build on what they learned about plotting points in a coordinate grid and learn how to reflect those points on a grid over the x and y axis.

7th Grade Math

This week in Math 7, we’ll be building our equation solving skills and applying them to real world situations. Students will start by exploring why different steps for solving equations make sense, then practice solving one step and multistep equations using a variety of strategies. We’ll also deepen our understanding of negative numbers and how they affect the steps we take when solving.

As we move through the week, students will use equations to solve word problems and make sense of real scenarios. We’ll wrap up by learning how to use equations to analyze percent increase and decrease—skills that help us understand discounts, markups, and changes over time.

Please encourage your child to stay on top of their assignments and reach out if they need support.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan

Hello Scientists,

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend and some of the many holidays this week! Students completed their Earth’s Place in Our Universe Summative test, cleaned out their science binders, and took a pretest for their next unit, Oceans, Atmosphere, and Climate. We came back down to Earth by exploring how the Moon’s gravity causes tides on Earth, which will connect with our exploration of ocean and air currents in our upcoming unit!

We will start off with a review and analysis of heat transfer. Students will apply that understanding to a Land vs. Water lab and will explore the phenomena of El Niño.

Roots!!

Our root words for next week are:

  • *aqua = water (Latin) (think: aquarium, aquatic)
  • cumulo = heap (think: cumulative, accumulate)
  • *cirrus = curl (think: cirrostratus, cirrocumulus)
  • *photo = light (think: photosynthesis, photograph)
  • nimbus = dark cloud (think: cumulonimbus, nimbostratus)

Keepers: dyn, mis, re/retro, bio, hydro, gram, astro, luna, grav, milli, centi, deci

Notes from MLL Support

Last week we introduced main idea and details along with citing text evidence at teacher-led stations. Students also completed the reading domain for ACCESS testing. We are looking to complete writing next week for ACCESS and continue with Read 180 teacher stations and student applications.
