Family Engagement Newsletter September 2022

CoyoteConnection Family Engagement Newsletter September 2022

Dear Families,

Welcome to the new school year. Our Family newsletter aims to provide you with information about our school family and engage you with content that applies directly to what your children are doing and learning at school. It will contain important information about events and how you can partner with us to support your child. We will include visuals and pictures that will give you a window into your child's school day. One thing we will need from you is your consent to display photos that include your child. Please help us by ensuring that you have updated all your information in our Aspen Parent Portal.

Our theme this year is ABOVE ALL BE KIND. We ask that you partner with us to promote kindness. We have included some book titles below that help foster and engage in dialogue about spreading kindness.

Sincerely,
Ruby C. Maestas

Hopes and Dreams: A Coyote Family Tradition

Partner with us by sharing your hopes and dreams for your child this school year. Complete the hopes and dreams handout that was sent home with your child. Start by reflecting on the previous school year and write what you would like for your child to accomplish this school year. We will read it and display in our school hallway. It will not only be on display for the year, but it will be a reminder to us all (students, staff, teachers, admin) of the goals you have laid out for the year. Our Hopes and Dreams display is a way to increase our schoolwide culture and community.

School Council

The Carver Elementary School Council is a representative, school-building-based committee

comprised of the principal, parents/guardians, teachers, and staff. This group assists the Principal in planning, goal setting, and developing a school improvement plan. The Council meets monthly, the second Wednesday of each month. This year, the first School Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 12, at 3:00 pm in the Conference Room in the CES Main Office.

The Massachusetts Education Reform Act mandates that each school form a School Council

and that parent members are elected from the parent community. There are currently two

Parent/Guardian Representative vacancies on the Carver Elementary School Council.

If you are interested in being a Parent/Guardian Representative to the Carver Elementary

School Council, please fill out the form that was sent home with your child earlier this week and return it to school by Friday, September 23, 2022.

WELCOME and get to know to our newest staff members

Hello everyone! My name is Abby Simmons and I will be joining the third-grade team this school year. I look forward to creating a welcoming environment for her students. Carver holds a special place in my heart, and I couldn’t be more excited to teach in the same town I grew up in. As a child my favorite book was Because of Winn-Dixie. Some of my favorite activities outside of school include skiing, kayaking, and walking my dogs. My perfect day would be a cool fall Sunday afternoon watching football with my family and enjoying a supersized bowl of mac and cheese. I am so grateful to be a teacher at Carver Elementary School and I hope that your students are as excited as I am for all the fun things we will be learning this school year.

Celebrating Birthdays

We are excited to partner with you to celebrate your child's birthday. Please remember that we are doing our best to be health and allergy conscious. If you wish to send something in to celebrate your child's birthday, refrain from sending in any food items. We encourage low-cost or no-cost items. Here are some ideas for including the entire class in the celebration: join the teacher to read a special story, send in birthday pencils, write special notes or make homemade party hats. At school, your child's birthday will be announced at our morning announcements, and teachers and the class will sing a special song for your child and share a special birthday message in the classroom. Some classes will hold a monthly birthday celebration and have extra recess or a classroom dance party.

Mathematics at CES Mathematics at CES

zoom_out_map
Carver Elementary School will continue to use Bridges in Mathematics this school year. Bridges is a comprehensive curriculum for grades Prek-5. It is a rigorous program designed to address math standards in a way that is enjoyable and accessible to all learners.
zoom_out_map
The curriculum is focused on developing a deep understanding of math concepts, proficiency with key skills, and the ability to solve new and complex problems. Learning activities tap into the intelligence and strengths all students have to be presenting mathematically powerful material alive with language, pictures, and movement.
Students in Bridges classrooms talk about math, describe observations, explain methods, and ask questions. They are encouraged to find multiple days to solve problems and show different ways of thinking. This is a vital way to help students build more flexible and efficient ways to solve increasingly complex problems. Hands-on activities engage them in exploring, developing, testing, discussing, and applying mathematical concepts.
