5 Things to Know Weekly Update
October 5, 2026
Dear Colleagues,
It's finally October, when the weather starts cooling down — all the way to the high 80s this week. We will let you know if there are any alerts from power companies, but until then, our air-conditioning should hold up well. If you are outdoors or in an area without cooling, please take breaks, drink water and move into cooled areas as much as you can. There should be only a few more days of unseasonable weather.

Ok, more pleasant topics: Hispanic Heritage Month continues this week! Today (10/5) at 1:30 p.m. there will be a "Platica" (or talk) centered on the struggle, perseverance, identity, and the experiences of the Latiné community. There will be aguas frescas and ALL are welcome to attend.
Tomorrow (10/6) there will be a workshop at 1 p.m. focused on practical tips, strategies and resources to help students succeed in college. Both events will be held in the Multicultural Center.
If you haven’t participated yet, or it’s been a while since you’ve stopped by the Multicultural Center, this is a great opportunity to visit.
This week is Pride History Week, with a Pride History Fest tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the Student Union and my favorite event, Drag Bingo, on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Union also. If you haven't taken part in Bingo, well...you are missing a lot of fun, trust me. 🙂 I hope to see many of you there!
Transfer events heat up (literally) this week on the way to Transfer Week next week. On October 14, there will be a Transfer Fair during the day and HBUHSD College Night after 5 p.m. (don't forget to sign up to participate!), and several other events during the month where students can connect with transfer options. Check out the calendar below:
Some work being done this month by President's Cabinet is assembling ideas for the other committees to discuss. The committee system won't work here — and consequently, GWC will not work well — unless we have multiple groups and voices contributing ideas and recommendations. The primary way to do that is through the participatory governance structure, so it's worth spending some time to make sure it functions well. We will also have a meeting with chairs soon to see what we can do. In the meantime, think about being on a committee you have not been on before!
I'll be out on Wednesday at a tour related to digital projects, but available the rest of the week — and at Drag Bingo, of course!
