HANDS ON ENGINEERING DAY FOR 7th & 8th GRADE STUDENTS
Last Friday, 20 Hinesburg Community School students learned firsthand about bridge building, city planning, water filtration, and more from a team of local engineers.
The experiential opportunity was part of the second-annual STEM Day, organized by Bill Atkinson, vice president of engineering services with Vermont Mechanical, and other area engineers. Among more than 100 students, seventh and eighth graders from HCS rotated through stations hosted by professional engineers from Engineering Ventures, Vermont Mechanical, Starbase Vermont, Dubois and King, and Engineering Services of Vermont.
“We have a broad range of engineering disciplines represented. All of their employers are super supportive,” Bill says of the two-dozen adult engineers who helped facilitate the program. Students learned about and navigated challenges in bridge building, developing sustainable cities, water filtration and robot coding—lessons that connect to and build upon what they’re learning in the classroom.
“This is unique, having a shared, hands-on experiential learning experience with engineers from Vermont,” says Anne Pius, HCS’s digital learning leader, about the opportunity to connect students with professional engineers.
“Last year with Mr. Lasher, we did fun engineering and STEM stuff,” says Jake, a seventh grader. “That was fun, and this is a lot like what we were doing.”
“I like engineering in general,” adds Ramsey, another seventh grader. “It sounds like a cool job.” Other students appreciated how the challenges involved math, gave them choice, and built upon classroom learning about robotics and coding.
Bill developed the idea for this conference having heard a resounding message from other engineers he’s met while traveling across the country. “It’s amazing how many people said, ‘I’m an engineer because of an experience like this,” he says. “It’s the right time to open their eyes.”
