Head Cheetah Message
Families,
It has been a spirited week at Memorial. Chanukah begins Sunday evening, at Sundown. Happy Chanukah to all who celebrate! And next week will be our last full week of December before the winter break. How did this happen!?! As a reminder, we will have an early dismissal the following week on Tuesday, December 23rd and school will then be closed through Friday, January 2nd. We will be back in session on Monday, January 5, 2026!
May your holiday season be filled with light, love and good health!
Have a great weekend!

Our Kindergarten learners proudly walked the catwalk to model all that they’ve learned about letters and sounds!
Pajama Day For CCMC
CCMC Pajama Day is an annual fundraiser for Connecticut Children's Medical Center (CCMC), held the second Friday in December, where schools and businesses wear pajamas to raise money and awareness for kids battling cancer. Memorial School has been participating for many years. Way to take care of others, Memorial School!
EHEPTO Hosts The Annual Holiday Shop
On Tuesday evening, students in grades PreK-5 came to Memorial School to get their holiday shopping done. They moved from table to table, “checking off their lists”, and then having their gifts expertly wrapped by EHHS Interact Club members. Thank you, EHEPTO for providing our learners with an opportunity to engage in the season of giving!
Memorial School Participates In The 2025 Traveling Mural
Memorial School will be participating in the 2025 Traveling Mural! We last participated in 2019. This is the 7th year of this project. With the Traveling Mural Project, we will be connecting with other school communities around the state to create murals of peace, friendship, diversity and love. Memorial’s mural will represent our Profile of a Graduate qualities. Students each created their contribution during library class.
We created our mural around our Profile of a Graduate qualities!
Right before break, our mural will be split into 10 equal pieces and mailed off to 9 schools across the country. As we receive our new 9 pieces, an entirely new piece of art will be on display in front of the library with information about the schools each piece comes from during the month of January.
PAWSitive Office Referrals
A PAWsitive office referral is submitted when a staff member recognizes a student who is going above and beyond to exemplify one of our three school rules - taking care of others, taking care of self, & taking care of things.
Memorial Models
Memorial Models are chosen weekly by their teacher. These students have excelled all week in taking care of themselves, others and things. The recipients will dine at a VIP table during lunch every Friday!

PE Basketball
Hi everyone,
The children continue to thrive on many new and exciting activities. This month our skill component is basketball.
The Preschool, Kindergarten and 1st graders are working on catching, passing, dribbling and shooting using a basketball or rubber ball. During shooting practice, baskets are lowered to a height children are able to reach while still using correct technique .All skill work is age appropriate.
Second and third graders are also doing a basketball unit with skills and activities increasing in difficulty depending on their age. Proper technique of dribbling, passing and shooting are being taught. The basic rules, safety practices and procedures were also explained.
Listed below are the skills and some of the activities practiced.
DRIBBLING - Both stationary and moving - right hand, left hand, crossovers and through the legs.
PASSING - Chest, bounce and overhead passes against the wall and with a partner.
SHOOTING - Proper technique and introduction of shooting games including Make It Take It, Around The World, Horse and Twenty One.
We are very impressed with the children’s improvement and attitude. They should feel very PROUD OF THEMSELVES!!

Notes From The Nurse
Dear Families of Memorial Elementary Students,
We are asking for your assistance in helping keep our school healthy and safe. We have been experiencing an uptick in lots of confirmed cases of both flu and strep throat. Please consider the following guidelines, provided by the school nurse, for sending students to school:
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
Mild headache and/or stomachache
Fatigue
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
Fever (equal to or greater than 100.4 degrees. May return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)
Vomiting (Even once. Must wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)
Diarrhea (Must wait 24 hours after last episode to return to school)
Chills
General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches
Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough
Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
redness and discharge from one or both eyes
To help prevent the flu and other colds, please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:
Wash hands frequently
Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth
Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on returning to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. We use our nursing assessment and judgment when students come into the nurse office and make calls home as we deem necessary. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.
Please also update emergency contact information! In case of an emergency or in instances where your child needs to be dismissed from school, it is extremely important that we be able to reach someone on the contact list. We have also been having trouble with parent voicemail boxes that are full and we are unable to leave a message.
Please let us know if your child is diagnosed with any illness or injury (such as strep, flu, pink eye, covid, pneumonia, fracture/broken bone, lice, etc.) as the nurse office tracks illnesses and sends notification letters home if there are 2 or more cases in a specific classroom.
Kindly,
The Health Office Team,
Nurse Katie and Miss Michelle

School Breakfast Facts
A great breakfast program is offered at school every day!
Here are some fun facts about school breakfast:
· It’s easy! Instead of running around in the morning trying to make sure your children eat a healthy meal, let us do the work. They can get a great breakfast at school, and there will be no dishes for you to wash!
· It’s affordable! If qualified, your child may be able to get breakfast at a reduced price or for free. If your child already eats a free or lunch, they automatically qualify for a free or reduced price breakfast.
· It’s tasty! Schools now have more variety to choose from when deciding what to offer your children for breakfast. Request a menu so you can view what your child may be eating at school.
· It’s good for the brain! Research suggests that not having breakfast can affect children’s intellectual performance (CDC).

Attendance Matters
Please note
When considering the number of absences your student has accrued, keep in mind that a student must be present for 195 minutes in order for the day to count! When bringing your student in late, or signing them out early if they have not been in school for a 195 minutes the day will be recorded as an absence.
