Welcome to our classroom!
zoom_out_map

Hello, everyone! Welcome back to school, and a special welcome to all of the new and returning families in the Frost music program! I am very excited about the upcoming school year and everything we have in store for our band, orchestra, and guitar students.

First, my name is Michael Rais (pronounced “Race,” like a race car) and this is my 20th year teaching at Frost Middle School. It is hard to believe that I am beginning year 20! I am incredibly proud of the music program we have built at Frost and grateful to continue working with such talented students and supportive families.

My goal is to give every student a place where they can grow as a musician, challenge themselves, build confidence, work as part of a team, and enjoy making music with others. Whether your student is picking up an instrument for the first time or returning for another year, I am looking forward to helping them take their next steps as musicians.

This email newsletter will be one of the most important ways for families to keep up with everything happening in the Frost music program. It will include important dates, reminders, upcoming performances, classroom updates, special opportunities, trip information, and anything else students and families need to know. Please take a few minutes to look through each edition when it arrives.

You can also visit our music department website at www.fmsmusic.org. The website is our main information hub and includes concert dates, class resources, forms, trip information, frequently asked questions, and many other helpful materials. If you are ever unsure about something, the website is a great place to start.

Communication and family support are a huge part of a successful music program. Please never hesitate to reach out if you have a question, concern, or if there is something I should know to better support your student. I am looking forward to working with all of you and making the 2026–2027 school year a fantastic year for Frost Music!

Let’s make some music!

Instruments:

Choosing an Instrument Vendor

I strongly recommend using one of the trusted music vendors listed on our website. These businesses provide quality instruments, competitive pricing, repair services, and ongoing support for our students and their families.

Please be cautious when purchasing an instrument from a general retailer that also sells clothing, electronics, toys, and other unrelated products. Over the years, I have seen students struggle with instruments that appeared to be a great deal but were poorly made, difficult to play, or unable to stay in proper working condition. If one of these instruments breaks, many music stores cannot repair it because the repair may cost more than the instrument itself. That can quickly become frustrating and discouraging for a young musician who may believe they are doing something wrong when the instrument is actually the problem.

Families are always welcome to choose where they rent or purchase an instrument. However, the vendors listed on our website have been recommended based on positive experiences from parents, students, music educators, and my own experience working with them. My goal is not to steer families toward the most expensive option—it is to help each student begin with a dependable instrument that will give them the best opportunity to learn and be successful.

Please make sure all reeds, mouthpieces, strings, and accessories are made specifically for the student’s instrument. If you are unsure about a product, please contact Mr. Rais before purchasing it. This can help prevent families from purchasing an item that is the wrong size, type, or fit for the student’s instrument.

Instrument Storage and Practice Instrument Storage and Practice

School Music Storage Room: Locker/Cubby
All students will be issued a school instrument storage cubby. Students are responsible for keeping it clean. There is no food/drink allowed in the storage area. If there is any type of misuse of the area, students will NOT be allowed to keep their instrument in the storage room. These will be assigned during the first week of school.

Before/After School Instrument pick up:
Students are able to drop off their instruments in the morning before school starts, and can pick their instruments up at the end of the school day as they are on their way out. All students pass by the music room on the way out at the end of the day. If students need to get picked up during the school day, may also stop in to get their instrument.

Home Practice:

Students should be bringing their instrument home as much as possible. Everyday practice for some families/students is just not realistic, but students do need to spend some time at home to work on these skills, prepare sheet music for concerts/playing assessments.

Backroom practice rooms:
Students do have the option to practice before (7:40a-8a) / after school (until 3:30p) and during Falcon Time (by pass only). Students who abuse their time in the practice rooms will be banned from future use.

Practicing: Yes, it is a must, but....

Practicing is measured in quality of practice, not quantity in minutes. Students will learn how to practice, and have plans to use at home. I will share more info with parents and students how to set a time frame at home and how much to practice.
